There are some boards AM2+ MB that can use an AM2+ or AM3 chip, but if you can make it work an AM3 board will enable you to upgrade easier.

Ran Memtest86, Passed with no errors, does that include or exclude any of the the possible problems?

If you ran it for at least 8 passes, it indicates the issue is not ram related.
