I'm still running the stock cooler, so I'll hold off on OC'ing for now. A few new coolers are on my wish list at New Egg... I'll be sending in an order in a few weeks. Thanks for looking at this stuff for me, Bloke!

another thing, you can safely overclock on the stock cooler BUT you will need a temp monitor (my personal fav is realtemp) and make sure its not hitting above 65c under 100% load on all 4 cores. there is no harm in overclocking, its just the voltages that can do the harm, but most hardware these days have overvoltage protection, but still better to be safe than sorry.

heres a little find on the q6600, when you use a temp monitor program make sure you set the TjMax values to 105c which is the maximum temp the junction sensor will recieve when it forces a thermal shutdown. the temp monitor will show you the temparature according to the TjMax settings, so if you set the TjMax to 100c instead of 105c it will show 5c lower temps, but this is untrue as the processor is maxxed at 105c.

Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q6600 - SL9UM

i just simply cant resist overclocking, even if i am waiting for a cooler to arrive, i still like to see what it can get on a stock cooler out of curiosity. but once you have tweaked up your system, post back your results! good luck.

not just the fsb but your timings are a little high considering they are ddr3 1066. they should be running at 1T as well, if i can run at 1T at 1600mhz no reason why you couldnt. im guessing they are cl7 1066 ddr3 chips? your tRC (20) could be a little lower as well, say around 16 or 18. but like you said, its a dell so you wont know if you can tweak it till you access the bios. i think the dells are F2 at post? cant remember. the last dell i played with was a laptop and they cant be tweaked at all normally anyway but i have never used a "brand name" desktop apart from a acer aspire peice of crap micro utx systems.

Well, boosting the FSB from 266Mhz to 333Mhz gave me a small increase in the mem test.

Is there any temperature monitor that can keep an eye on the FSB temps? I'm using CoreTemp64 now.

I'd like to boost the FSB up to 400Mhz, but not until I can watch the temp in there.

Is that good? lol

Almost everything on my laptop sucks. :(

yeh thats about average for a lappy, but laptops can be very limited to what you can adjust in the bios and i have heard of people using 3rd party software to somehow overclock laptops. tho i have never tried but then again, why would you want to overclock a laptop, increase power consumption, and laptops already produce alot of heat due to the compact enclosures. this winsat mem test is more to compare with others, personally i have not noticed a huge performance increase when going from 6800mb/ps to 8200mb/ps so my advice to laptop owners is simple, if you want to overclock save up and build your own project like myself, its fun (apart from when your getting frustrated from reboots) and laptops just wernt designed to be overclocked, with everything so compacted so close to one another the heat generation is huge compared to a desktop, and finding replacement parts can be difficult depending on what country your in.

at the end of the day benchmarks are purely for people who want to 'rate' their system against others to see how far they have come in tweaking, the overall system performance gains are usually not that huge unless your going to the xtreme of something like 5ghz on the cpu and can afford to have a backups of cpu's, ram modules and mobo's when that northbridge fries itself. and then there are people like me that just cant resist attempting an overclock no matter how old the desktop is. my last fiddle was with a pentium 3 2.8ghz 2mb cache 478 chip, 1.2gb ddr1 ram @ 200mhz and a 133fsb, what a blast! lmao

i have yet to attempt getting an old system and putting it in a fish tank and filling it with de-mineralized water for a experiment to see the advantages of a tru water cooling build.

I had no intention of overclocking (I know you didn't say I said I did). I know the dangers of it, which is why I haven't really done it.

Lol to the DDR1 @ 200Mhz

Also, I saw something very similar to the thing you last fiddled with, in a fish tank, with de-mineralized water, on Creigslist for about $1.2k.

No one bought it. =P

the reason i mention not to o.c. laptops is cos i have had alot of friends that got me to install o/s's they preferred and all the laptops i have used when sitting on my lap without blocking the exhaust and intake vents still get really warm, one amd laptop i had to keep moving as it was almost burning my leg. lol. so you could imagine if people with laptops like that were to overclock them, you could just about fry an egg on the exhaust vents. just a word of warning IMO, but if you want to try it show us the results, and if it doesnt have the settings in the bios i will be interested in how you can actually alter the fsb and mem speeds with some sort of software so i could experiment with an older laptop i have.

yeh the 200mhz is a real blast to work with, especially when your used to using ddr3 quad core setup and that was a rebuild for a friends work machine that purely just controlls a digital camera and you have to install XP and all the software and only have 1 monitor at the time.:p

$1.2k! i never thought it would be so expensive? i have seen heaps of the vids on Utube with the water and even special grade oil, the actually showed the system running then they just add the oil to the tank. i find that really interesting, so naturally i wanna try it out. lol but what i was thinking is the motherboard will be completly bare, no heatsincs anywhere justy strait de-min water contact and a radiator with fan cooling and a few fans and pumps to allow flow and cooling to some point, just like a cars cooling system.

Yes well, unless I can overclock my Intel GMA 4500MHD to get better video/gaming performance, I have little interest in overclocking. :)

Yes I thought it was high priced too, apparently the mineral stuff is very very expensive, or was at the time I don't know it was around xmas 2008.

hey nice rig, is that 3.65 the stock clock or is that overclocked? i dont know the specs on amd's. nice scores to, the i7's get around 20k when overclocked so thats pretty close.

oh and welcome to the Seven forums, i noticed your running 7100? im on that build now and am downloading 7260 to see what its like. i couldnt be bothered keeping up with all the other builds.

well here is the difference with the 790i Ultra (XFX) and the 790i (digital PWM EVGA).
the advantage with the EVGA 790i digital PWM is it has almost no VDroop (around .008 difference opposed to .058 with the Ultra) and a mere 100mbp/s bandwidth difference. not noticeable at all. Aparently EVGA had to recall the 790i Digi PWM's for a faulty conexant chip? there was a world wide shortage, i dont know what that conexant chip is but thats why i had to wait so long for my RMA to come back, i suppose it was worth the wait then?

On the LEFT is the 790i EVGA Digital PWM, to the RIGHT we have the 790i Ultra XFX
both overclocked @ 1800FSB and 1680MHz RAM with the same timings and voltages.

personal best is my 2x2gb Super Talent Project X 1800 9/9/9/24/2T @2001MHz 9/8/7/18/2T on the xfx 790i Ultra. 8830mb/s
