Who is running and will continue to run XP / W2003 server

Hi all
Just a little tiddly teaser to see as much as we like W7 on this Forum who is still going to continue to run XP or Windows 2003 server on at least ONE machine - Real or Virtual and roughly for how much longer.

I am running full time a Windows 2003 server and a Windows XP pro box both as Virtual Machines and will probably run them for at least the next TWO years.

I have some old but VERY useful hardware such as a Plotter and an Archtects blueprint producing printer for which the manufacturers no longer exist but it works perfectly on the XP / 2003 server Virtual Machines.

Similarly I have an old Firewire Agfa negative (35 MM ) film scanner -- have got 1000's of old negs I want to digitise, and several Minidisc recorders who need XP to transfer music to MD. I LIKE these MD recorders and I'm not going to bin them yet.

So for me XP / W2003 server is staying AROUND. I might consolodate the XP system so I only keep W2003 server but that box is also running a Web MySQL application and a proxy VPN so I can logon to it wherever I am overseas so can get "localised" restricted content.

So although a VERY happy W7 user XP for me (and the 2003 server which is essentially the server version of XP pro) is staying around for a while even if only on a virtual machine.

Interested to hear what others keeping XP for a while are running on these machines.

I have XP on my older machine ( duel boot with Vista ) and will keep it until the computer dies as some older games I have only install/work on XP. I also have windows 7 Ultimate on my newer computer and am running XP mode, my original plan was to use XP mode and scrap XP on the old computer but again XP mode is not as compatible for older games/programs as having XP as a host OS due to hardware limitations ( ie: video card )

I have my old PC dual booting with XP/Suse.
Need XP for some of the work software I have that doesn't run in a W7 64bit environment, so until that's fixed, XP is still going!

I have XP on an older machine and until that PC dies, it will stay there.

I also have XP as a duel boot on this machine. There are a few things I use that Win 7 just will not run (don't care for virtual machine). I will say that I boot into XP far less than I did when I first got Win 7. This is because I have found software that I can use to substitute for those that would not run on Win 7.

Win 7 seems to get better all the time.

I will still be using XP mode for quite a while. I have one program that just won't install in Win 7 x64 and I need it for work. Other than that, Win 7 does everything I need.

I have two P4 boxes here still running XP-SP3 and they will stay that way because I am lazy.

It takes time to prepare and install a new OS, so until someone comes up to me and says "I've had it with XP and I can't take it anymore!", I will not be volunteering for that job.

I have XP running on a couple of PCs with old hardware in them. I don't think I'll ever upgrade them to 7. It'll be XP until I retire them or give them away. I have 7 on my new PC that I use 90% of the time. Any new PCs with decent hardware that I acquire will be windows 7 though.

XP lives on

in my machine as a dual-boot with Win7 (64-bit)/XP (32-bit) because there are some programs that simply won't install on 64-bit Win7 that I use for graphics work mainly. I use XP only for those occasions I need to open those programs now though, as many of my everyday computer use is in Win7. I also find ftp work (uploads) to go quicker in XP but unsure why. I'd say I use XP maybe 10 percent of my computer time now.

I have an XP box at home that i use with the scanner that i have which doesn't have a 64-bit driver. I'll keep XP around until I replace that scanner.

As far as Server 2003....pretty much all of my servers (if they run Windows) are on 2003. And I have no plans to upgrade any of these at any point yet in the future. So, as long as security patches and critical updates are available....there is no real incentive to switch. These servers simply run the apps that we need to run and they are stable....so why spend money and time getting the underlying OS to something else to just redeploy the same app to serve customers.

I have several old servers that are running Server 2003 SP2, and there's little or no reason to go through an upgrade, nor to justify the down time or cost. They are slowly being replaced with newer, more powerful servers running Server 2008 R2, however.

I eliminated my home server (Win 2003) and all machines running XP about 6 months ago. I won't be going back. If there's something that won't work on 7, I'll find something else to use that will.

I use XP mode on VMWare just for testing out any new applications, other than that don't see the point. I love Windows 7. I intend to keep up with technology, although I'm still holding on to a DualCore, I plan on skipping right threw to AMD SixCore processor soon....

Are you really stuck on AMD...because for less money you can get a core i5-750 or corei5-760 which equals our outperforms it. And yes, I did say less money.. in this case, Intel has the edge not only on performance, but price.

I have an old laptop running XP. However, it seems I will be getting a new one towards the end of the year, that one will naturally run 7. That's the end of XP in my home. I do however have an old desktop running Win2K - this one shows no signs of illness (unlike the dying laptop) and so there is no need to change anything there.

I must say that I have very few bits of software - some old 16-bit stuff - that won't run on 7. I use them so very rarely, that this alone would not be a reason to keep an old OS. However, the old PC is better left with its old OS in my opinion, which is what I do. I do not upgrade OSs, I just get new PCs with new ones.

I run XP with the Virtual PC VM (which is pretty good, easily comparable to Sun's xVM; the shutdown is much slower, however). I need it for a few apps which don't run on 7 such as my (2010) cell phone's software. Can't believe new software doesn't work with 7...stupid. I'd rather use a VM which can access my drives locally, than deal with an extra 200-300w wasted and using the network for transfers if I were to use a separate PC. I do have my old PC running Slackware, because sometimes you just need a Linux environment to do stuff. I can't stand dual boot - so inefficient.

Same here Jacee, my husband uses that machine, it was my old one, he gets the hand me down Any new machines I get so as the XP works perfectly and is adequate for his needs until it dies and we can afford a new one we will carry on using it.

Of course when we can afford a new machine he'll get this one of mine and I'll have the new one so then we'll both be using Windows 7, unless 8 is out then I'll be using that

I have 2 laptops that run XP pro. The wife prefers her laptop to stay XP as that is what she is used to although she is getting used to Win7 on my desktop. My laptop has XP on 1 drive (I keep it updated but not used) and Win7 on the main drive that is used. Guess I will keep them as they are until they die.

Most of my neighbors all run XP and have no interest in changing until the computers die, so, I will be supporting XP for a long time yet I guess.
