Why am I getting automatic restore points named "Critical Update"?

Hello - I have my Windows update settings to "notify but do not download." When I check my history of restore points I see that there are several created anyway with the description "Windows Update-Critical Update." I checked one of them for changes to programs and drivers and the were none. This seems to happening about every 3 days.

Can anyone explain this behavior? Is this just an automatic update that is mislabeled? And why every three days - from my research it appears recovery points are supposedly scheduled every seven days?

Hello Ed, and welcome to Seven Forums.

By default when System Protection is turned on for you C drive, Windows will automatically create a restore point right before any Windows Update is installed. Since it was a critical update, that's why the restore point was named that.

Hi Shawn - thanks for the reply. I guess I should have emphasized that I have not downloaded or installed any updates during the period these Critical Updates appear.

If it were not for the regularity of the timing, I would guess MS was pushing some updates despite my settings.

Not sure, but you might change your Windows Update settings to "Never check for updates" instead to see if it continues.

Years ago whole enterprises lost their computers because of a bad Update, even though
Windows update settings = "notify but do not download."

Microsoft then admitted that they reserved the right to ignore the "... NOT download" if an update was intended to ensure that a Windows update would not fail in the future.

Since then I always use "Never Check ..." unless I really want to let it happen.
