Why are hard drives open at the bottom?

I got out of my Issuzu at work one night and raised a spark so big and bright, someone over 50 feet away saw it. I get zapped almost every day at home, some days worse than others. Winter is worst.

I guess the answer to the exposed hdd pcb is ease of manufacture.

So you don't think that heat dissipation is an issue? Drive can get pretty warm during sustained data transfers. If you wrap that controller board up with the warm drive, your going to need to cool the various chips.

usernameissues - fair point re heat, I was thinking disks, heads assembled in sealed unit in sterile area of factory, pcb added somewhere less critical.

It's not really open on the Bottom just exposed circuit board that I doubt unless you are really a clutz could damage it just like video cards and pci cards all exposed

With the way things are made today that is a minor issue that a custom enclosure could fix right away

Like that old saying you get what you pay for and unfortunately if you want it to look real nice then you have to spend $$$$

The exposed HDD controller boards on the bottom are actually slightly more protected than they were several years back. Back then the actual components on the board were attached pointing outside from the HDD, you could basically see and touch the actual IC chips and everything on the board.

Nowadays, the board is flipped over and we only see the back of the board and legs of the various components if we see anything at all, which if you ask me greatly reduces the risk of inadvertantly damaging them with something like a screw gone AWOL.
