Why can't I do a clean install?

No >.< i haven't gotten that far into installation, as im stuck at "preparing for firs time use"
it wont let me do anything. I have rebooted now 10 times and ot goes to the same thing. What should i do?

During reboot, tap the F8 key to get a menu that lets you choose Safe Mode

Oh, i meant like when in safe mode, i literally cant even load that up yet because it says i need to complete installation first

That may be the problem, can't finish because of Display adapter (driver) for video card.

During the DVD disc install did you have the computer connected to the internet by a ethernet cable, so you could get the latest updates & drivers from Microsoft ?

Doing a start up repair, seeing if that helps. No matter how many tines i reboot it brings ne to the FINAL setup, meeeeaning if i can fix the unwanted reboot during, the comp is fixes

I have a choice to install updates?
When i go through the installation, it gives the "updates" a checkmark
but i guess it is just skipping over that.

It is a frequent cause of problems at the exact point where you are having them. The graphics card is trying to load its driver and is failing. The solution is to either: default to onboard graphics chip in BIOS (if you have one), insert display driver in Safe Mode in Device Manager, or use Vlite to slipstream the driver into the installation DVD: load in extracted ISO files, click Next and select Drivers then provide unzipped Win7 display driver, create ISO, burn using burner provided at 4x speed.

Download and Install Vlite version 1.1.6 first, then download and install version 2.1 over it so you don't have to install the huge MS W.A.I.K. vLite - Windows Vista configuration tool

Your description of how you burned copies of the retail DVD sounds wrong. You would have to extract the ISO using a special program like ImgBurn or PowerISO to burn another DVD, or write to flash stick. It doesn't sound like you did that. Where was the copy of Win7 purchased? What does it say on the DVD?

Have you tested your HD using maker's full diag/repair CD scan? and your memory using memtest86 cd for 5-6 passes?

My dad made me call our family computer guy (very professional) And told me i need to replace my graphics card probably.. Did you tell me a way to fix it without buying a new one?


To be honest, since my uncle gave me the computer there have been little tiny colored dots (randomly) and ever since my comp crashed it has gotten worse, spreading around alot on the screen. I never thought it was a big deal till yesterday.. I assume this is caused by my malfunctioning display driver

First try reinstalling the graphics card. It could be a problem with the way it is seated, or connected, or a cable. You can get help on doing this in the hardware forum here. Or google a tutorial.

Do you have a physical card in one of the slots, or is it a graphics chip on the mobo?

Do you have another OS you can install to test?

When I don't want to waste any more time troubleshooting problem installs, I remove HD to another machine to do the install. Be sure to unplug all but target HD.

It will often start up when returned to problem machine, swapping out all drivers while requesting several restarts. If not, you can boot into Safe Mode to swap Mobo and video drivers which will often start it. Otherwise run a Startup Repair.

The other thing to try is to slipstream the display driver into the installer using Vlite which I explained earlier.

You can also try another video card borrowed from friend or bought to try from store that will let you return it if it "fails."

If i were to get another video card, wouldnt it have to be a specific one? I have an extra computer, no os, that might have a g card. Idk if it'd work though because of how old it is

Well if you don't have a machine capable of installing Win7 to the HD (you can try it) then try slipstreaming the video driver into Win7 to see how that works. It is a great learning experience.

First go back through thread and make sure you have tried everything suggested. Ask any questions so we can help get these checked off and come up with new ideas.

There were no reports back on the results of memtest86 CD test run 5-6 passes to stress test RAM, or the HD diagnostics using Seatools for Seagate and GWScan for WD drive:

Test both sticks of RAM

You tried install with 2gb of RAM to one HD wiped with DISKPART Clean All, now try other RAM stick. Then try other HD, wiping it too.

My video card is "e-geforce 7950 gx2"
i'm reading that there were a few errors with this one and that they haven't releases a "fix" yet. So idk what to do >.<
