Why Does Windows Update Install Bunches at a Time, & Not All at Once?

So I've always wondered this: When you install Windows, obviously you need to apply all the updates and SPs that have come out since the version was built. So my question is this: Why, after loading and installing the first 100+ updates, does Windows Update come up with a bunch more, and then after that, a bunch more, and then still some more? Why not all at the same time? Does it not see certain updates until certain updates are installed?

Just curious.

Hello Gus,

It's due to some updates needing to be installed before others, or some updates could conflict with others if installed at the same time.

It would be nice to be able to install them all at once, but it's highly recommended to only install the one selected by default first, and repeat until there are no more updates left.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Well a uneducated guess.
For some update to completely install you must restart to complete the install.
For other updates to install the previous updates must be installed.
So they come in batches, reboot and then another batch of updates and reboot ect.
Sorry; I was typing while Brink was posting.

Yep, I figured all of that, I just thought at some point they would simply figure out a way to have them all "show up" at the same time, and then install in the correct order, with the correct reboot in between, etc.

A Service Pack 2 for Windows 7 would be nice as well, if for no other reason than to combine all the previous updates.

Yeah, it's all about Win 8 now, but Win 8 wouldn't work on some of the older machines I've got. That's the problem when you have 8 computers, too many to keep current! :)
