I have a Lenovo Ideapad Z585. It has a Broadcom 802.11n wireless adapter.

I have not had the computer that long but everytime I turn the computer on, my home wireless network is not connected automatically. I click on the WIFI icon in the system tray, locate my network and click connect.

I am told that windows cannot connect to this network. I run the troubleshooter which tells me to powerdown my router, turn it back on and try again. I do this and use troubleshooter to check if fixed and it connects.

So far I have updated drivers on wireless adapter and then rolled them back again. Uninstalled driver, powered down and turned machine back on reinstalling said driver.

I have done a factory reset of my router, changing login passwords. I have tried using different broadcast channels.

When the machine is connected it is excellent signal strength and I do not loose connection at all.

I have three other machines connected to router which is a Netgear DNG 1000. They all connect automatically and stay connected.

Any suggestion on how to get connection to work automatically?

To fix this problem you will need to follow all advice in the link below, I just fixed this same EXACT problem, same model Lenovo.

You must remove all preinstalled bloatware using Decrapifier as a guide, update all drivers from the Lenovo site and Windows updates, you must also remove McAfee completely using the uninstall tool. :)

Cannot connect to WIFI

Followed your instructions.

When I rebooted the wireless connection connected straight away. I managed to do a little surfing.

I then rebooted and connection did not start, had to go through the troubleshooting routine again.

That was pretty fast, I would make sure the drivers are updated from the Lenovo site, be sure and run the removal software on McAfee and make sure all the Windows updates are installed and use Decrapifier to remove all preinstalled bloatware.

Use the wired connection to do this if you have too.

If you are still having problems, please post the ipconfig/all from this machine. :)

Thank you for your advice, I had already read your link whilst looking for a solution, wasn't sure if it would work in windows 7 though. I will go through everything again and see what happens.

Next question will be, did you install any type of third party Anti virus software or firewall?

This all looks good and shows a valid IP is connected. I assume this is after you hit the diagnose button and are now connected?

This is usually a driver problem when you can't connect at start up.

Lets try the IPresetAll file to reset everything network related. Unzip and run the file until your machine reboots.

You might also want to test to see if you can connect at start up by starting your machine in safe mode with networking. This would indicate that an installed program is causing the problem.

Most likely a driver problem in that case but I'm curious, which wireless security and encryption are you using?

Your router should be set to use WPA2 with AES encryption.

It may help to remove the wireless profile for this connection then create a new one that defines the same settings as your router is using.

I have just checked the router settings.

It is using WPA2-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access with Pre Shared Key) with AES encryption.

How would I remove the wireless profile etc. as you suggest?

Just go to the Network and Sharing Center, look to the left side where it says "Manage Wireless Connections"

Remove the old profile and make a new one with the proper connection details and see what happens.

I've also noticed that you don't have the Microsoft Virtual adaptor installed, this adaptor installs with all Windows 7 approved wireless drivers.

Because the Msoft virtual WiFi adaptor isn't installed it indicates this Broadcom driver is not Windows 7 approved.

I would suggest you look around for a Windows 7 approved driver, maybe Windows update or the Lenovo site.

Removed connection profile and replaced as per your instructions.

Unfortunately it has made no difference.

Onto the drivers!

I download the driver from Lenovo. When I install it tells me the file is already present on the system do I wish to overwrite and I click yes to all. I then get error message " The operating system is not supported. The software will not be installed. Setup will now exit". I can now find no trace of the driver on my system, no Wi-Fi at all. I have had to plug laptop into the router with a cable. Help!

That driver isn't approved so no wonder it's causing you problems. Typical Lenovo.

It may help to get the driver from Broadcom directly or Windows update may have it.

Trying to find it on the Broadcom site now, easier said than done.

A question, on my device manager when I check the driver, it says it is provided by Microsoft? Aren't you saying it isn't hence causing the issues?

Not sure if this is relevant.

Again in Device Manager, driver file details lists two files.

One is a Broadcom file, the other a Microsoft file.

Also do you have any idea what to look for on the Broadcom site, I enter the details you would expect and get lots of hits to stuff I don't understand.
