I hope this is in the right forum. So when i first bought my computer it had vista. I was able to get windows 7 for free from microsoft/windows. Anyways, a couple years later and my computer is becoming sluggish, not nearly what it used to be.

If I do a complete system restore and return it to factory settings, will it keep windows 7? If not is there a way I could get windows 7 again? Because Im not sure I still have my install disc its been so long.

thanks

To the best of my knowledge Microsoft has never given Windows 7 free to anybody. Well maybe Bill Gates got a free copy.

Incorrect. For people who purchased a new computer with Vista, or purchased the media for Vista (retail or OEM) right before the release of Windows 7, they got their Vista machines with a free upgrade coupon to Windows 7. They give it away, because otherwise people would hold off on buying new computers and wait for 7 to be released and this isn't good for companies like Dell and such who make and sell computers.

Also, for some of us, we attended the "The New Efficiency" presentation by Microsoft which was held at various movie theaters and such and was free. This event introduced us to features of Windows 7 and Server 2008...as well as new things about Exchange. For attending this free event, Microsoft provided free copies of Windows 7 Ultimate (32bit media).

So, I got Windows 7 free twice. I bought an OEM copy of Vista with the free coupon and they sent me my free Windows 7 disc. I then attended that presentation and got 7 Ultimate (retail) edition for free. I've only used the free one from the presentation. The other one is still sealed in the box.

honduranHeat,
Welcome to SevenForums.

My guess, not based upon fact, is that you are out of luck without in install disc that you received from Microsoft. You could try contacting the mfg of your computer, assuming you still have the sales receipt or registered the computer at the mfg's site, and ask them. I expect a polite no answer.

One thing you can do, it's legal, is to borrow a Win 7, same version, from a friend. You can install it and put in your Product Key that came with your PC. It should be on a sticker some where on the PC.

I found this very common during the Vista to Windows 7 transition. A specific reason I held off a new PC purchase.

I think the OP needs to give us an update report.

When Vista was struggling to get any market share, particularly with Windows 7 on the horizon, I remember new computers being sold with a promise of a free upgrade from Vista to 7, so it's disingenuous to suggest people never got Windows 7 free.

I think the OP is owed an apology.

It was also done between XP and Vista as well. When Vista was on the horizon, Microsoft/vendors offered a free upgrade from XP to Vista once it began shipping.

(1) I would think there should be some reference code to your upgrade somewhere on your computer to allow MS to honor an upgrade. It's worth talking to MS.
(2) Alternatively you could buy an upgrade disk which is much cheaper than the full Windows 7.

Presumably your PC has a Vista COA sticker on it.

When you bought the computer with Vista with free upgrade to 7 you paid for it. It was built into the price of the computer. I have never been to a woppy movie and get a free anything so I have no knowledge of such things.

honduranHeat,

Back on topic. Our experiences here are all varied. Sometimes I think that we are llke the blind men who touched different parts of an elephant, fro example, one the ear, one the nose, one the mouth, one the tail.

Consequently, they all came to different conclusions about elephants.

What is important here is you and and your problem.

Did you locate a Win 7 DVD? Yes or no?

A 32 bit DVD or a 64 bit DVD actually contains the starter, home premium, professional,ultimate...in other words all of the versions are there. We have tutorials to show how to extract your needed version from the DVD. What is important is that you need the 32 bit version dvd or the 64 bit dvd version.
