Win 7 64-bit and problems with Adobe Reader/Acrobat

I recently started having problems on two computers that both run Win 7 64-bit. The problem is that when opening a PDF file I get this box indicating to choose these options and then there is a check box to not ask me about it again. If I check it off, it goes away.

Then when I try to close the tab that houses the PDF file, it will crash IE with acroread.dll being the culprit.

What happens next is that if I try to read another PDF, the same box that I already told not to come up again will come back. It seems like it isn't getting the proper permissions to hold this setting. I found a fix via Google that said to just open up the Reader program and check off the box there -- that fixed the pop up box problem.

The remaining problem is that regardless of if I update to the latest version of either program, I continue to have IE's tab crash whenever I close the tab that houses the PDF file.

I'm wondering if there is any fix this this? I never had this happen to me up until I'd say about two months ago. It was perfectly fine until then.

I switched to FoxIt Reader and will never go back to Adobe Reader, ever. (I changed the icon for pdf files back to the same icon used by Adobe, so it looks the same, but uses the better/faster pdf reader).

Are you running this in IE x64?

No, IEx32. I wish I could do that but I would prefer to stay with Adobe Reader.

Can you double check that the correct IE is loading? I had this problem with the 64 bit IE, ended up using 32 bit one 100% of the time, but after that I decided FoxIt was just 100 times better anyways.

Go to the help drop down arrow on the far right -> About Internet Explorer, make sure it says 64 bit.

It is 32-bit. I can't use 64-bit as it doesn't work with a lot of the things I use IE for.

Try an older version of Adobe Reader (uninstall 9.1, then install 8.1). Looks like some people on 9.1 were having this problem, it was corrected by downgrading to Reader 8.1

Sorry for intruding - I am saying that since I can't really help with the problem at hand, I don't have this problem at all, all I can say is that the pdf plugin does not work with 64-bit browsers (both IE and FF), while the 32-bit browsers (actually, FF, I don't use IE very often) have no such problem on my Windows 7 x64. Back when I started working with Vista x64 Adobe Acrobat would not run at all and I had to wait for the 64-bit patch. However, once the patch was out - everything works well ever since.

Now, my actual question is - is there a native 64-bit version of the FoxIt Reader?

- So far, nothing yet. But the 32bit one runs perfectly fine over here... it's so much faster than the old adobe, difference is like night and day. When Googling it, it seems like I'm not the only one to be suggesting FoxIt a lot lately.

Can you tell me (us) what version of Adobe Acrobat you're using? Also, what version of Adobe Reader as well?

Also do note that if you have Adobe Acrobat installed, you don't need Reader.

I just installed Adobe Acrobat 9 on W7 x64 and during installation was asked which program, Reader or Acrobat, I wanted to use as a default for opening PDF files. I chose Acrobat.

Is Foxit safe to use. I know Adobe had problems with hacks and many updates to fix. I am curious if Foxit can also be exploited with a hacked PDF file.

Can we just focus on the OP's Adobe problem?

Yes I know I can use Foxit Reader or whatever other alternative there is but I feel that Reader and Acrobat should work, period. Is there any other workaround for this?

After much troubleshooting, the best solution we found was to download and install Adobe 8.2 which works flawlessly. It is the fully patched version of version 8 so security is not a big problem.
The issue is to download version 8.2, you have to tell the current Adobe downloader that your OS is Windows 2003. If you do, it gives you the option of downloading Reader 9.3 OR 8.2.

Installed 8.2 and everything works.

Like MaksiSanctum, I had to install Reader 8.2 in order to get Reader to work under W7Pro. To get to R8.2, I had to tell the Adobe downloader that I was running an other system. It then gave me the option to check XP SP3, and this gave me the option to select R8.2.

For better or worse, I also turned off all of the Norton anti-ware prior to making this attempt. Yes, folks, I changed multiple variables at once, so I cannot be sure which action actually was the effective one.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if you uninstalled adobe reader 8 (in a later post you mentioned you had installed this ver.) and re-install ver 9 (the latest, at least on my pc is 9.3.4). I am running windows 7 Ultimate X64. I've never had a problem with adobe, whether with 2GB or 4GB of RAM.

Are there any entries in your event log that might show what is/was happening with adobe?

Well, we upgrade Win 7 x64 bits to SP1. The Adobe Acrobat 10.1 and 10.0 keep crashing. Even we tried to change to compatibility 32 bits Vista. Still same problem. Anyone have same problem? How did you solved it?

BTW, where can I download the old version Acrobat 8.2 to try this?

Also, When we first use Windows 7 x64bit Ultimate, we do not have this Acrobat crash before. After install service pack 1, we constantly have this acrobat crashed, probably every other time we open a pdf file viewing.

Found Adobe to download Acrobat 8.3. Same problem.

No, Adobe Acrobat X was the first one we installed. And that was the one every systems in the entire building had problems of crashing while viewing ANY pdf document. We had to go to every work stations and remove that piece of junk. Adobe, never again.
