Solved Win 7 can no longer back up to NAS, but Explorer can read/write files

I have a NAS which for some reason periodically goes off line in Win 7. I have it mapped as drive Z:, but periodically it won't connect on boot. Resetting the NAS usually solves this, but the last time I did it, Windows couldn't even see it on the network for three days. It finally showed up, and I remapped it.

Windows Explorer can see the NAS drives and read and write to them fine. I use the NAS and Windows Backup to back up data files. Since I had to reset the NAS and remap it, Backup said I had to re setup the backup location. Trying to set it up gives me an error message:



When I try to set the permissions to full, I get the following message:



Backup previously worked as drive Z: and I was able to set the permissions to full without issue. I find this odd because Windows Explorer can read and write files from Drive Z: as well as the backup folders, but Windows Backup will not work, and Windows Explorer Properties/Security will not allow me to change the permissions to anything but "Special Permissions" (That's how it's set right now).

Actually, since testing it again, Windows Explorer can no longer read and write to the NAS, though I can successfully map it. I cannot assign permissions.

Is it possible that the drive doesn't have much if any free space? If so, and if you therefore free up some space, does that solve the problem?

The drive has 1.4 TB free, according to Windows. I'm starting to think that either the NAS is broken or Win 7 is broken. The machine is a dual boot, so I'm going to try it with Win 10 and see what happens.

Stupid thing is, it used to work fine until it went offline a few weeks ago. Now when it came back it doesn't work. I'm baffled.

Ok. After a lot of diddling around, I completely reset the NAS to factory settings and started over...

And I could get permissions back and read and write to the folders on the NAS...

Until I ran Windows Backup to backup my files. It has reset all the permissions to access denied, even when using Explorer. I am unable to reset the permissions again, unless I go through resetting the NAS, etc.

Any ideas on why this would happen?
