Help please

I have Win 7 factory installed on a Asus Desktop All in One. I guess I don't understand why the disk is broken up as win 7 (C) disk & Data (D) disk. I was transfering my bought & paid for AMZ MP3 files via thumb drive to the new computer from my old HP XP System.

I created a new folder on my screen & after a few dumps of files-I get this message saying Win 7 (C) disk almost full at 40 Gigs. I have a 250 Gig disk. What gives!!!???

Go to computer icon, click on it. You will see the c drive. Does that agree with the message. I am trying to determine if the message is in error.

How large is your back up drive?

You may have to make the C drive larger. There are tools like gparted or I would just reinstall. Make a clean install and when asked how big a restore partition, something like 15% would be good.

I just noticed that the OS is factory installed. You can go back to factory specs, if that is the best for you. Just read your manual it will tell you how. Basically, it is using an f key to bring back to factory specs. Assuming that what happened to your drives did not corrupt the drive needed for the operation.

No there are 32 and 64 bit versions avail..Assuming that everything you are saying is correct. I would try to return it. The stores have easy policies around this time of year. You can exchange it for the machine of your choice.

Ok-so there are 32 bit & 64

my first question is how does the computer OS decide what goes where C win 7 or D data. I understand what a petition on a disk is.

I the computer operator do not tell the computer where to put what when make a new folder name it AMz mp3 and then dump the mp3 files onto the icon on the screen. Or are we back to DOS where I have to make the directory & manually tell it where to reside???? I sound fececious I am sorry. I am just totally frustrated.

If there is a choice, you should be asked during the installation

pebbly-you may have answered my question- the ASUS manual pdf is totally useless it's 38 pages. I actually know a lot about computers and it seems quite obviously that 40 Gigs Win7 is way too small. That's the obvious answer,

But I have barely used this computer; it has very few downloads like my xp . Are computer manufacturs so stupid (apparantly so) that they think a 40 Gig partitioin is all I need for the OS AND WHY is the computer putting mp3 files on the C drive and not the D drive??????????

Hi cdog46 Welcome to SevenForums, take a deep breath and calm down. First go to windows explorer and rt click the C: drive go to properties, see how big the drive is and how much is used, then go to D: rt click, properties see how big and how much is used. Let us know what you find in #'s or post a screen shot and we'll go from there, its nothing that can't be fixed.

I use a Magnum.
Thanks to everybody for their help. What I did was just copy my audio files which were 13 Gig unto the Ddrive. It begs the question how they went into the C Drive when all (I think) I did was to create a new folder & name it but the icon was referenced to the wrong drive.

Yes-I get my panties in a bunch & shouldn't but I think computers should have advanced a lot more than they have in 50 years but that's a discussion for another time.

You can move your Documents, Pictures and Music folders to the D:, like this:
  1. Open Explorer and navigate to your D:
  2. Create a seperate "Documents" folder
  3. Navigate to your User Profile Folder (As shown in the screenshot below)
  4. Right-click on "Documents", then select "Properties"
  5. Click the "Location" Tab, then click the "Move" button
  6. Locate go go INTO the "Documents" folder your previously created in step 2 above, then click the "Select" button
  7. Click "OK", and answer "Yes" to all prompts, AND ALLOW THE MOVE TO COMPLETE
Repeat steps 1 - 7 above for those folders you want relocated to your D:, I mostly just move "Documents", "Pictures", "Music" and "Videos", but if your regularly also place files on your desktop, you can move the "Desktop" folder also.

Let us know if this has worked for you.

i myself personally think you should resize the "c" partition if that is what you are used to (using the whole drive for system AND data) glad we are able to help you with this one

Curious if its already set up as it should be for the disks configuration.

If you click start/ then your user name at the top right ..
and choose a folder such as My Music,
dont open it, but right click it and choose properties.

in the General tab where does windows say that folder is located?

if it saying C ..

You need to do as Dzomlija has suggested above.

When copying Mucic or videos, just open the correct folder and copy them to it.
It should write it to the correct disk.
Unless the directories were not set up properly, in which case it writes them all to C/ rather than D where they should be going in this case.
which seems to be whats happening.
