I just put this computer together (check out my specs) and put the OS DVD in to install. It goes through the motions of "loading files" and then when it says "starting windows" it gets just to the point where you can see all 4 colored orbs and it freezes.

How do I fix this issue and install windows 64bit?

Will the machine boot safe mode?
It would help if you could at least look over the logs and figure out the source of the halt.

Not to bash your hardware but I've personally had nothing but pain and suffering from biostar...

how do I load it in safe mode? When it goes to boot options it says hit any key to load from disk. If I wait it tries to load from the HD but there's nothing on there

ok, the process is a little more difficult but I figured it out. However, when I go to load it in safe mode, it freezes at "Loaded:\windows\system32\drivers\disk.sys"

I'm guessing your OS is going on the 75gig drive?
Exactly what make and model is it?

Damn, I was hoping I'd find it was a solid state drive, that would have given me a clear step.
Since it's an older IDE drive, are you using a older cable with it?
A old cable that's been transferred from one machine to another can sometimes become problematic.
Though that doesn't seem incredibly likely here. I'm kind of running low on ideals.

yes, I am using an old cable? This is an old drive I wiped and salvaged because I figured It would be easy enough to put my os on the small one... I can try a different cable but they're all going to be old...

Do you think I could install Win 7 on the drive while it is plugged into another computer? (problem is it might be tricky finding a computer that has 64bit system...)

Where did you get Win7? The ISO and DVD burn need to be confirmed first. Burn another DVD at 4x speed using ImgBurn, or write to flash stick using this tool: Universal USB Installer – Easy as 1 2 3 | USB Pen Drive Linux

Reset the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

Try wiping the HD first: SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

If these fail test the RAM and HD: RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp

Yes, you can install to this HD in another computer with it's HD's disconnected. Then if it won't start on the target hardware, SysPrep the HD to get it to start on any hardware: SysPrep to move HD to another computer

Greg, not sure what you mean by your first step, but I'll try reseting cmos, rewipe the HD, and test them both.

As for installing it on a separate computer...do I have to have their HD disconnected or can I just install it fresh? Or is there a way to disable their HD without disconnecting it?

Where did you get Win7?

If you have to plug in your HD to another computer, you might as well unplug the native HD's while you install. Otherwise you need to disable them in the computer's BIOS.

bought it (win7) from newegg?

OK you can eliminate the installer as a suspect. But writing the ISO to a flash stick will sometimes work anyway: Install UltraISO trial, On File tab Open DVD, on Bootable tab Write Disk Image, Format, Write.

one thing I did try (and didn't mention) was I used a fresh download of the bootversion of Fedora 15 and it kinda did the same thing...got to a menu that said fedora will start in 10sec and then it froze up.

EDIT: Also, the only other system I have on hand that has a 64bit setup is a laptop, however, I have a typhoon USB HD hookup system that allows me to turn any IDE HD into a USB portable hard drive... the idea I was running off of was that I could install it that way and then plug the actual drive to my new computer. Would that work?

wow, after resetting the bios/cmos and rewiping the HD I have made even more progress... it made it to the screen that lets me use the mouse, but no menus popped up...

EDIT:
Looks like I'm just impatient after waiting so long for the initial "loading windows" and "welcome" screen junk...after a 5 min wait I finally got a window prompting me to proceed with the setup of Win 7.

Thanks for you help guys!

1) Try with the Sata HD.

2) Try with only 2gb ram.
