I have a pc that our neighbor gave us a win 7 home premium 64bit dell inspiron 560 tower duo core 3 ghz 4 gb ram they gave up on it saying it just won't stay on.
First thing I noticed was the date was all wrong, i changed it but sure enough within 60 secs the thing shut down on me, signed in again same thing no matter what I do it shut down.
I changed the cmos battery since i had a new spare, also tried startup repair it finishes tells me to restart yet does same thing.
Took it apart pretty clean inside, fans all working checked cables reseated ram, changed cmos battery, here is the ODD part, if I don't connect the internet the thing stays running! If I connect the ethernet within a min the thing dumps and restarts.
I am in the process of moving some cleaning tools like spybot, superantispyware, malaware, etc to a thumbdrive and am going to see if i can get them to load scan etc can't quite update them (yet) but figure I will see where I am at with that.
What other things could I check or do, I figured maybe remove the cpu and use new paste altho this isn't that old, and it doesn't seem to be overheating that I can really tell, I do have a psu tester i can see if I am getting stable voltage but just find it odd that it runs if there is no internet connected....
Right now I have the thumbdrive loading up on the main pc and ill see if i cant at least install and start some basic spyware/virus stuff on it as that might be it, just looking for other ideas to check too.
Hope I can get it going for my 13 yr old to use seems decent just not sure what's up with this rebooting stuff.
I do have a oem home premium disc for a system i built 2 yrs ago if I used that to boot from could repair do more than the startup repair option?
