Hi, I have spent much time looking for the answer to the long shutdown time on win7.
I have read much info' on regedit alterations, ref;changing 20,000 to 2,000 but that only effected the desktop closing down to Shutdown screen.
Desktop to shutdown screen now only 2 seconds GREAT !
But shutdown screen still takes over 2.5mins to close.

Decided to put in Regedit Search ' Shutdown ' (Try it youself)
Results are: *machine*/ Microsoft/windows/diagnostic/shutdown/
The figures in brackets, if in seconds is 3 mins, around my closedown time.
Can this info' be used to alter the close down time ??

Hi there
Check also you don't have a myriad of "Services" running == sometimes these can take FOREVER to close.

I'm not sure what applications you have on your system but nearly every Windows machine I've ever seen tends to have a zillion start up services.

I haven't a CLUE what most of these are -- google for more info -- but IMO it must be these since after Clean windows re-install Shutdown is almost instantaneous.

(Avoid those "Registry Scanner / Tweaking" sites -- they are usually SNEAKWARE - you load a little application and then afterwards you are pestered with a load of NAGWARE to insist you "Go Pro" or Buy this or that).

Just search Google and test removing the odd service until you've got the answer.

Have a look also at the desktop to see what processes / services are still running just before you hit the shutdown button and compare with the other computer.

Not the most technical answer but I'm sure others on this board hopefully might suggest something easier -- but if all else fails use the tools you have at your disposal. !!

Cheers

Whenever I encounter a lengthy delay in shutdown, it usually involves hardware attached as peripherals. Poor communication between device and OS leaves OS befuddled and sends the OS into diagnostic and troubleshooting modes during shutdown.

Note the time of shutdowns and check the event logs for alerts during those times.

I take it you used some registry program? Is that correct? We always want to know what fixed it, but we also don't recommend registry programs (except CCleaner's). A Guy
