Started about a week ago have always keep Zone Alarm and Malwarebytes up to date, run scannow regularly.

What happens if the pc is totally off and you turn on it goes through the Win start up sequence and then to the black screen and just sits there with only the cursor showing. FWFW that cursor can still be moved. . Sometimes if you wait a long time the Win desktop will eventually appear or not.

Usually a rard shutdown and manually start will work or restarting a few times.

PC works fine otherwise...
Can this just be s setting issue in the startup power settings? What should my settings be set at

TIA

BTW WIN & still the best made

That’s completely normal especially for slower computers with traditional hard drives

--- black screen and only cursor
usually it hints, booting but NOT reach to read hdd yet.

If stop here forever, then BIOS/boot has a problem. fails before reach to to read hdd.
If move slowly, eventually Windows starts (Win 7 or WIn10/11), the "black screen and only cursor" gone, then could be PC slow or hdd failure is pending.

Lets do the basic
Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
chkdsk c: /f
It will say your disk is in use and ask if you want to schedule to next start = yes
Restart
Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks, bad clusters, bad sectors etc

Back to Windows, open a CMD window as administrator and type:
sfc /scannow

If it finds any corrupted files, fixing or not, reboot and run again

My recommendation is to install a small SSD for Windows and programs and use the HDD for data only. It will cost you less than US$ 25 and make it boot in less than 20 sec

Thanks all, actually I found a article online on the MS site.

My next issue was in the power center I checked balanced and keep hd on and hit ok.

It worked but got the blue screen to sign in w password (I never use one) clicked on the dell icon and it worked and opened to the desk top.

So next went to the power options again and saw it reverted back to the dell choice

Opened the drop down to balanced and again chose never turn off hd. Then I noticed the apply option was greyed out.

So back to HD options clicked on turn off choice and then the apply icon came on.

Went back to HD options choose never, hit apply and ok.

That did it nice fast startup.

On the MS site they mentioned a bad update of some type could cause the issue. The latest one was yesterday from Adobe, I double checked that the update did install and it did.

Thanks all
