OEM Product key invalid - clean install with new OEM disc

Hello

I've just built this new system having had my old MoBo fail on me. On that system I had Xp professional running off the one of the 2 x Western digal hard drives.

I am trying to install Win Home Prem 7 SP1 64 bit bought from Ebuyer.com in the UK.

Installation 1: I connected the Samsung SSD as the primary drive with the two western digitals attached (including one with XP still on it). I installed Win7 onto the SSD - which was quick and fine until I got to the activation stage - which said my product key was invaild. I tried several times. Didn't work. I called to activate and the support person said there was a upgrade problem. I didn't select upgrade during the installation process though.

Installation 2: I disconnected the 2 x western digitals and formated the drive using the Format feature in the Win7 set up. This installed a different Win 7 alongside the existing one (giving me a dual boot on the SSD - even though I formatted the drive?!). Product key still invalid.

Installation 3: I format the drive using the Command Prompt in the Win 7 Set up process. Then restart - and install again. 1 version of windows this time - but still product key invalid.

Insallation 4: I boot the PC using the western digital XP drive, and try to upgrade it from within XP - this doesn't work as XP is 32 and Win 7 is 64 !

Installation 5: I format the SSD using the device manager/disk tools in XP including the Clean function. Disconnect the Western digital drives. Install WIn7 from boot. Product key still invalid. Call to verify installation - they confirm the product key is invalid - again asking about upgrading - but I don't have an upgrade disk and in this installation there is no other O/S.

What have I done wrong? Was it the first installation with the drives connected?

The only thing I can think i've not tried is too disconnect the SSD - make the western digital drive with my XP on my primary drive and try and install Win7 on top of it. Which is not ideal because I want to run the O/S from the SSD. The partition with XP is on is just 20gb so - i wanted to create a larger partition for the o/s to run on.

Any help guys?!! Thanks! Greg

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

The Product Key in use is the Default Key - which cannot be activated.
You need to change the Key to the one from your Windows Package, and then activate that.

Click on teh Start button.
In the Search box, type
SLUI 3
hit the Enter Key and follow the instructions.
with luck it should activate over the internet.
If not, use telepone activation

telephone activation (operator calls)
Click on the Start button
in the Search box, type
SLUI 4
and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions, but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you

Obviously the Keychange didn't take, for some reason, then.
Try it this way - rebuilding the Licensing Store at the same time

Recreate the Licensing Store
1) Click Start button.
2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
8) Type: net start sppsvc
9) Type: slui.exe 3
10) After a couple of seconds you will be asked for your Key - use the one on the COA sticker.
Hopefully, this will activate automatically. If not, leave it for the moment.

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report

Something is obviously preventing the successful Key change -
what Anti-Virus are you using? what other security software is installed?
I'm tempted to suggest uninstalling all such, and running any available removal tools for them, until such time as we isolate the problem.

Before that - lets try the old-fashioned way :)

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands

slmgr /upk
slmgr /ipk <Product Key>

where <Product Key> is the key from your sticker, complete with dashes.

Here I have to admit to being unsure what the response will be - I suspect that you'll get a 'success' or 'fail' message,
If it's 'success', then before clicking on the OK, run another MGADiag report and post it. (then attempt activation - post a new MGADiag report after that as well)

If it's a 'fail', then we need to know the EXACT error message you get.

That looks as if you used a normal command prompt window rather than an Elevated one??

Try again, making certain that you run the CMD command as Admiistrator

(standard spiel follows)

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Windows, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Ahah! - a meaningful error message at last :)
0xC004F050 usually means that you've misread a character - either C/G or B/8 or Y/V are the most common.

Note that the following characters cannot be used - A E I L N O S U Z 1 0 - so don't bother trying unless you like the noise it makes :)
an O/0 is almost always a Q
