Solved Win 7 Prof not genuine and cannot enter genuine OEM product key

I recently downloaded SP1 to my Windows 7 machine and shortly thereafter a message appeared on the lower right hand corner indicating that "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of windows is not genuine". I bought this machine used and so I verified the key with Microsoft and it is a genuine OEM key but try as I may there is nowhere to enter a product key. I go to start-computer-right click- and at the bottom under Windows Activation it states Status: Not Available - Product ID: Not Available and NO place to enter a product key. Also all of the DOS commands that I can find on the Net do not seem to work either. When I contact Microsoft support they are no help at all and tell me I need to do a CLEAN install with the disk that came with my machine. The only problem is that no disk came with this machine. I have also been told by "Tech support" since I have an OEM key I just cannot use ANY install win 7 disk. I have a TON of Apps. loaded on this machine and it TICKS me off that I have a VALID OEM key and seemingly no way to enter or fix which I suspect is a Microsoft bug to begin with as they have overshot to prevent piracy. Someone Please help!

Also - it's quite normal for a Keyfinder to find a different Key to the one installed on a machine from a Direct OEM - and the OP has not told us the make/model of the affected machine.

I am sorry for the delayed response to this thread which I started some time ago. After I posted my problem above I left for Thanksgiving to spend time with my family and I forgot this machine at my home. So my apologies for the delayed response and my hope is you can still and are willing to help me.

I ran the winkeyfinder and have produced the MGAdiag report below. I can tell you that the winkeyfinder did produce a different product key than what is indicated on my COA sticker on the bottom of my machine. I do not know if this will be of any help in getting this resolved but winkey finder also gave me a product id which had a -OEM- within it's key sequence.

I bought it on ebay. I have made the seller aware that I am having this problem and they have offered to send me an extrinsic key to insert to make this genuine. I told them to send just before thanksgiving and have not heard from them since. Is this possible to make this genuine? The only way I am able to enter a product key is by typing -slui 3 from search and then during validation windows errors out with a 0XF807 error.

Looks like you have been had. Better cut your losses and buy a new key. Short of that I have no idea how to get you out of the hole.

Yes I bought this machine used on ebay and I know this may be a dumb question but that would stand to reason that this machine should not be loaded with OEM keys. Right? Sorry new to this end of things as my forte has been those icky mainframes.

Buying a full retail key from MS is the most expensive route. I would get an OEM version from Newegg - a Home Premium is only $80. I assume you can just apply the product key without a reinstall - but since I have never done that myself, I am not 100% certain.

PS: Just checked on Newegg. The $80 deal has ended and it i $99 now. But they offer tht all the time. So keep checking.

What I am after is Windows 7 professional and just to make sure I know what I am looking for I need to keep my eye out and purchase an OEM product key (vs a retail product key?)? I am still confused between the two and just want to make sure I purchase the right one. Whenever I talk to Microsoft they keep telling me I will need to do a clean install should I go the retail route vs going with them and (purchasing) a key and avoiding a re-install of windows. I find this hard to believe. So if you could help me with the proper verbage on what I need to look for when looking to buy a key I would appreciate it! Also besides talking to microsoft do you know who would know if just installing a key I purchased would work for this? Thanks!

An OEM product key means that the operating system is tied to the motherboard of the computer it is installed on and generally speaking you won't get support from Microsoft if you need it. Support is provided by the system builder or the vendor and is the main reason why this is the cheaper option. Strictly speaking, you cannot transfer an OEM operating system to another computer.

A retail product key qualifies for support from Microsoft and the operating system can be transferred to another computer providing it is removed from the one it was previously on.

If you want to save money, go down the OEM route. If you want Microsoft support and more flexibility, go down the retail route.

In case you didn't know, OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer.

Well, first question is what is the edition of Win7 you have on the system now. If it is a professional edition, then you need a professional key in any case. If it is any other edition (e.g. Home premium), you would have to reinstall with a professional key. You cannot apply a key of edition 2 to edition 3.

In principle an OEM key provides the same system as a retail key. Difference is that you cannot move that key to another system and that you get no MS support. Plus the EULA says that you should really be a system builder to use the OEM editions - but nobody ever checks that.

Thanks for this clarification. It is appreciated. Yes, I currently have windows 7 loaded on this machine and I just get p*ssed every time I have to deal with "microsoft support" so I do not want or need that - so the OEM route is where I am going to go.

SO, with that being said, would it be correct to say that buying a OEM windows 7 professional product key from say Egghead for example would allow me to enter this key without having to do a clean install of the system. What about the OEM product key the keyfinder is showing on my machine currently - how does that come into play? And why when I call microsoft and give them the OEM product key listed on the back of my laptop (and they say is valid) it will not take it when I try to enter via search - slui 3?
