Win 7 Sleep and Wake Issues

I have struggled with this problem in vista x64 & it now continue with win 7 x64, many solution tried nothing works as of now.
XP on the same hardware sleeps perfectly fine & wakes up on mouse /keyboard moment.

Read about this problem at several forums & I have not seen any solution to this problem yet.

ranjan, thats interesting, because I did absolutely nothing to my Vista x64 build except make sure I had the latest drivers and it works flawlessly.....wish it were the same with 7:(

I notice you have wifi and also an Audigy sound card. Have you tried, repectively, fiddling with wifi settings like powering off before computer sleeps and also either updating drivers for the Audigy and/or searching specifically for sleep problems with the Audigy?. I KNOW I read somehwere on a forum that Creative cards have given trouble before.

Still no luck with getting this darn thing to wake. Still fiddling with hub settings and USB selective suspend....good fun

Can anyone reccommend a stable newer build than 7100 to try?

Vista in my case did work initially without problems & one day suddenly this problem started after that I updated every thing I could lay my hands on but nothing worked, I even did a reinstall but the issues remained.

Win 7 from the 1st beta showed this problem so I have concluded that there is no real solution to this problem & may be its my 3 yrs old hardware which might be at fault.

I do have a wifi on board but I have disabled it & never installed a driver for that. With or without creative card I have tried, nothing solves the problem.

I even have tried a bare bone pc, all hardware removed, no drivers installed latest bios running on default...........................but as I said nothing solves the problem.

If you want I can post the links of other forums where I discussed this.

If I remove my optical mouse win7/vista both sleep peacefully atleast, so may be its something to do with mouse but then I cant wake it up even with the keyboard.

Finally!!!

SUCCESS!!!!!

It WAS the RAID drivers. As far as I can tell, my computer now sleeps/hibernates (sleeps at least, haven't checked hibernation specifically) and I can wake it up from any source, mouse, keyboard and TV tuners.

One interesting thing, I'm still getting Error messages in my events:

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1.

Etc. for both drives.

Still obviously problems with the RAID drivers, but hey, as long as this keeps working the way it is, it can give me all the errors it wants!

Will update tomorrow after full reset and normal operation

Storage drivers seem to be the weak point with Win7 - I don't know about Vista or XP.

Were the RAID drivers beta drivers? If so, then this may be an unfixed issue with them that should be reported. If not, then I'd wonder about the integrity of your RAID card and your hard drives.

They don't appear to be Beta drivers,

I got them from the link you gave me after making sure they were suitable for the X58 chipset.

There's PAGES of unresolved errors in the realease notes and only a handful that have be resolved, including some, which mention unlocking drives after S3/S4 and other S3/S4 power resume things, which must be what fixed mine.

I would assume the error comes from one of these (here's hoping or at some point I'm going to lose the array)

Any way to check the integrity of an array, other than looking at the intel software? I'm sure probably by default it says the array is healthy.....

ranjan, stupid question, but have you emailed Asus, asking if they've had an experience with your issue on their motherboards? Also, you said it started suddenly, and you didn't change ANYTHING before it started? At all? Not drivers, not particular programs, utilities or anything? Even changing windows settings for something entirely unrelated?

I noticed as well that when you remove your mouse, it sleeps. Have you tried the tool called Mediacentre Standby Tool? It works to stop computers hanging before sleep and after resume and fixes alot of power bugs and USB device bugs that can often stop sleep. It's got LOADS of different settings that you can go through, but sometimes, just installing it is enough. There is a Win 7 version, its still a work in progress, but it got mine working. This is the direct download link. The instructions on the individual settings are here

Unfortunately the instructions only refer to the XP MCE and Vista version, the newer features for Win 7, including things like disabling fastresume and idle times settings are things you'll just have to play with. It's an awesome tool.

Yes I did try contacting asus here is what I discussed
[Problem Description]
I tried default BIOS setting which used to work fine with XPsp2

When I press Sleep button on the keyboard what is happening is that its actually
hibernating, It shuts down completely for 2 second then power up again but the power is only for the cabinet fans the hdd light up but the PS2 keyboard does not get power back so
now I cant wake it up & I dont get the screen display & I have to do mains off from the
UPS.

Then I start again & computer now says "windows resuming" instead of "windows
starting" It then brings all my program open in the last state & takes 3-4 mins to do so, which is waking from hibernation.

I read about the problem here in asus support section
http://tinyurl.com/nr6u3x

It says "set the appropriate USB port or PS/2 port jumper from +5V to +5VSB."

Do I have to physically change something on the motherboard or its a setting in BIOS
which I cant find. I am using the latest BIOS 1238 from Asus.
Asus replied
Does the problem exist if you choose "windows sleep"(not keyboard button)?
Please enter device manager and disable power on(or wake up)function of lan controller, USB device(esp. mouse) for a test.
Please just leave CPU, Fan, one memory stick, VGA card and HDD on board to test if the problem still exists.
At last, you can install the latest drivers on our website for a try.

I replied back again
Hello Lyn,
I tried your suggestions but nothing worked to solve the problem.

1. "windows sleep"function is setto 15 mins & has the same problem as the keyboard
sleep button.

2. I removed all devices & just kept 1Gb of ram with mouse & keyboard to test the
sleep function but it still not solve.

3. In device manger I disabled power options for lan controller, USB device(esp.
mouse) but did not solve.

If I remove the mouse & then press the keyboard sleep button then the computer
sleeps (without restarting instantly) but then how do i wake it up, the power to
keyboard is lost & I have to hard reboot.

I disabled Hybrid sleep in power options on Vista even that does not solve.

My BIOS > power setting are at default (every thing is disabled there) do I need to
enable something in BIOS?

I am hoping we can find the solution to this problem.

Does P5B Dlx wifi motherboard has any +5VSB jumper I cant find that, can you tell me
or show me where it is located?

Looking forward to hear from you soon.
Thanks for the support.
Asus replied

No, the motherboard does not have such +5VSB jumper. There is no need to set it manually.
Please enable ACPI 2.0 Support in BIOS for a try.
And please check whether you have installed vista OS patches.
Also, you can install a fresh Vista OS for a test.
I reinstalled Vista SP1 on a bare bone PC (all devices removed except mouse keyboard & graphic card)

Thanks for the suggesting Mediacentre Standby Tool, let me give this a try I will report back.

ranjan,

I noticed you talking about +5vSB. On Page 2-32 of the Manual for your board (downloaded from the asus site, your paper one might be different) it discusses the Mainboard ATX power connectors that come out of your Power supply and go into the board.

I do not know if you're situation would be similar to mine, but I know that for my board there are 2 separate types of ATX power plugs you can have, a 20-pin and a 24-pin. Mine is a 24-pin, but if I had a 20-pin, I have to have a special plug separate from the main plug to ensure that the +5vStandBy and obviously its corresponding ground are connected, otherwise, your computer will NOT be able to draw power during standby mode and therefore, won't be able to wake up by any external device.

As I said, I don't know if this board even has this situation and I'm sure that that plug is correctly installed, but I just thought I'd mention it. However, if the standby was working in XP, it's unlikely to be this.

DO have a go with MST, it's a great tool and it's gotten me out of more jams, including this one, than I can remember.

Thanks for pointing that but asus confirmed that in my case +5vSB is not applicable, moreover I do have 24 pin ATX power connector & the whole setup works fine with XPsp2 haven't tried sp3 yet.
I am trying MST & reading this page
MCE Standby Tool 0.9.094 on Windows 7

uptill now doing various setting I am still not able to sleep, seems that some combination of settings are required based on hardware only then it would work. Actually I loose power on my keyboard hence I can get it to wake up & the mouse wont work in waking up. On some settings its going into sleep & just after 1 -2 sec it again wakes up but no video signal no power on keyboard.

Just wanted to know that I don't use media center for any purpose so will MST still work, i dont do any recording or TV watching. I only have songs playing the whole day so when I am not using computer all I want is that the sound should play using windows media player &the computer goes to sleep.

XPsp2 does that exactly.

You need to be using v0.9.098 that I posted if you're not. There's an entire thread JUST on MST for Windows 7 on the MST website if you want to see if other people are having similar troubles. The thread youve posted is concerned with Vista and XP, but it may still be useful.

MST will work regardless if you use Mediacentre or not. Alot of people simply use it in your circumstance, to make sure their computer can come in and out of sleep without problems.

NOTE: When playing with MST, you may have to restart after changing settings. Always restart and then try sleep in between changing settings for ease of troubleshooting.

Make sure in the devices Tab in MST (after hitting refresh) the keyboard is ticked so it's allowed to wake the computer, as well as the mouse. In fact, I'd tick EVERYTHING in there except LAN cards, to make sure you've got everything set to wake up the computer. I'll send a screeshot later tonight if you're having trouble.

In the USB tab, you probably want to start off with "USB selective suspend disable" UNticked. Then try it ticked to see if you're keyboard will wake the computer up. If the mouse won't work on Resume, try the next 2 boxes in the tab, tick the disable fastresume box and try and then the other one (can't think what it is called) and try. Then try them together.

Also, MST makes a log file while its being run. That log file is usually stored in your C:\Users\"Your user Name" directory for example on mine it would be in the C:\Users\Administrator folder. If you can upload that file, I can have a look and try to see what is going on.

The powercfg command run in command prompt in Win 7 is also an excellent tool. You can find out what drivers\processes are causing the computer to stay awake by typing:

powercfg -requests

This will list the system devices\processes, if any, that are requiring system time and stopping the computer from sleeping, however with MST enabled, it should force sleep regardless of the process. It seems this is what is happening, you just can't get it to wake, like me before I updated the RAID drivers.

powerfcg -energy

This command firstly monitors your computer's power needs for 60secs and settings, analyses the results and then produces an .html log file. If you can upload or copy\paste this, we can see if anything is massively out of the ordinary (almost always there are errors in this log file, but they don't always effect the power settings for sleep)

DER! Stupid me!

I just realised, you said you were using a PS/2 Keyboard didn't you?

I've never had any luck, ever with waking a computer from a PS/2 keyboard. You can't select the keyboard and tell it to wake the computer anywhere in Win settings, OR in MST. Win 7 and MST only deal with USB devices properly for sleep. I even have a secondary PS/2 keyboard plugged in so I can access the BIOS as sometimes my USB keyboard plays up after restart before entering windows, but the PS/2 keyboard will not, no matter how I try, wake the computer. If you got it to work in Vista and XP, you're very lucky, cause I've never been able to.

Can you wake the computer with the mouse? You may need to move it vigourously and click it several times. It also needs to be selected in the Devices tab of MST (as I said, selecting everything but LAN is an easy way of making sure, as it's not always the one that says mouse, often they have a secondary driver that needs selecting too). If not, all I can suggest is trying to get a cheap USB keyboard and see if that works. I've never looked back since PS/2 was replaced, it was troublesome at best.

Oh, and try going into command prompt first, THEN typing powercfg -energy. I'm not sure what happens when you type it in run, I've never done it. The File will be located in your C:\Users\"Your User name" folder eg. C:\Users\James

One Step Forward, One Step Back

Well, I hope that works for you.

It appears my system will go in and out of S3 sleep quite happily, but it refuses to come out of hibernation. I guess it's still the RAID driver causing problems, cause I'm still getting disk errors in my events log. Not the end of the world, but annoying nonetheless.

Might try and different build if I can get my hands on one....and can be bothered!

I did a clean install of x64 build 7600
Te 1st time boot at default bios setting made the computer sleep perfectly (without instant restart)
But the mouse & keyboard could not wake it up ps2 keyboard lost power.

so On 2nd boot I changed the BIOS setting >power>APM setting> enable mouse & keyboard to wake up.

I then rebooted & did windows update it installed ACPI driver ( ATK0110 ACPI UTILITY) made the computer sleep but now it restarted just after 2 sec of sleep so actually it did not go into sleep mode.

Is ACPI causing some trouble?

Reading some of the other posts makes me realise what an ignoramus I am in these matters hence an even greater need for assistance!
Ever since installing Windows 7 on a dual boot basis as an alternative to my Windows XP installation I have experienced problems with the standby function, or rather awaking from sleep mode. The implications are rather more serious with Windows 7 there being no standby function as such and there appears to be no way of waking the computer from sleep mode other than to do a hard re-boot by removing the source of power as currently it will not respond to either the mouse or keyboard or even the power button.
Regarding the the Windows XP installation recovery from standby mode is now effected by use of the power button (as opposed to user of either the mouse or keyboard hitherto) which restores Windows XP without however re-booting as in the case of Windows 7 installation.
I have noted references in forum posts that the installation of Windows 7 effects one's bios settings but this being unknown area to me I would wish to be better informed before attempting to make any modifications there n order to effect a solution.
Currently on accessing the America Megatrends bios under Power the drop down menu indicates against Suspense mode - S3 only followed by ACPI support - No and finally ACPI APICS Support as being enabled
Frankly the foregoing references are meaningless to me but hopefully may suggest the source of the problem to someone better informed. All assistance towards finding a remedy would e appreciated.

Hi.

I'm having a problem with my ACPI Sleep Button.

My notebook won't enter sleep mode and it looks like the sleep button itself is causing it.

This shows up after running the POWERCFG -LASTWAKE:

Wake History Count - 1
Wake History [0]
Wake Source Count - 1
Wake Source [0]
Type: Device
Instance Path: ACPI\PNP0C0E\2&daba3ff&1
Friendly Name:
Description: ACPI Sleep Button
Manufacturer: (Standard system devices)

There is nothing in my BIOS to configure power options.

Is there a way to setup ACPI S1 or S3 in the registry?

If yes, I think that would probably solve my problem.

Attached the MST and DevDiag report.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
