Solved Win 7 Ult 64 genuine or not?

Hi guys,
I hope someone can give me some advice. Non-computer literate girlfriend bought an ACER laptop with OS pre-installed and no disks. The laptop was purchased from a reputable retailer in a shopping mall about 4 years ago and was primarily used for email, facebook, skype and games. I gave my girlfriend some basic instruction but noticed she had no on-line protection so I downloaded a firewall, AV and cleaning applications. I checked and cleaned up every few months, finding the occasional trojan etc, and also downloaded updates. She reported some performance problems when I was away working and took the laptop to the mall who identified and removed a virus. Another issue was that the battery started to fail and had to be replaced last year. The only other significant issue was that I tried to update to Win 8 and all started well but the install failed and further attempts just resulted in the disk not being read and a message saying that UDF system was needed. I downloaded the recommended UDF reader but no change. With all the hype surrounding Win 10, I have been cleaning and updating the laptop over the past week and noticed a lot of some Windows Update download failures. I managed to get these to download and install in batches although this sometimes took 3-4 times. Sfc /scannow would not get past 44% until I ran chkdsk / r and /f and then everything was okay except that now Windows is no longer activated and does not accept the product key. I downloaded and ran the System Update Readiness tool and now have 'This copy of Windows is not genuine' showing on a black background. I believe that the Win 7 Ult 64 Build 7601 OS is genuine (although I did not appreciate that any previous lack of Windows activation would result in a subsequent issue and may not have been activated properly by my girlfriend). I do not understand how the OS cannot be genuine and cannot be activated with the product key given. MGA Diag report:

The installed Product Key is the Default Key and can never be activated.

What Key have you been attempting to input? - you must use the one from the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), and it must be for the same edition of Windows 7 (Ultimate, here).

The normal configuration of the Aspire 4750 is to be shipped with Home Premium - for which edition is the COA sticker valid?

The 'default key' is is the only product key available. Unfortunately, there is no COA sticker on the laptop (or perhaps it was on the original battery) and the girlfriend did not realise the importance of retaining any documents associated with the original purchase.... :-(

If the laptop came with Windows 7 it will have one of these on the laptop or in the battery compartment. Not on the battery.

The OS was already activated and there is no COA label on the laptop and I cannot ever recall seeing one (as there was previously no need to enter the product key.

In that case, the conclusion must be that the install is counterfeit. :(

Let's see if a tool can fix one of the problems - if it can, there maybe hope yet...

Download WATFix - make sure that you UNTICK the box for the 'download manager, and click on the link on the left of the page, not the big shiny button on the right (which is an ad for the download manager!!) - and use that - extract the .exe file, and run it, then reboot.

Post back with another MGADiag report, and we'll then see what we can do.

Thank you for the Windows loader advice. Does the activation 'fix' then allow updates including Windows 10?

Before trying that, having had no significant issues previously, are there other methods to confirm whether the OS is genuine and can be activated?

The test of any system is the Product Key - either in the form of a COA sticker on the case, in the installed software, or in the case of Retail Keys, on the Proof of License card included in the purchased package (or in the case of software downloads from the MS Store, the email from the store)

The Key here is one that is installed by Windows Setup when installation is done without entering any Key into the system during setup - it may also have been entered in an attempt to do an Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate to increase the sale value of the machine.
Without a COA sticker with a valid Key, we have to assume that the installation is counterfeit, unless there is a valid SLIC table in the BIOS.
At present the SLIC table appears to be corrupt - this could be a result of a hack, or a genuine problem with the BIOS - either way it doesn't help the idea of the system being genuine.
Hopefully running WatFix will sort out some of the potential problems with the system and allow us to see things a little clearer.

Not a chance - the BIOS is dated over a year before the release of Win 8.

The computer did not come with Windows 8 but I did attempt an upgrade to Win 8 Pro. The disk ran normally and downloaded Win 8 but during reboot reverted to Win 7 and, after that, further attempts to run the disk would only show the UDF system error message. Is it possible that this could corrupt the SLIC table?

It's possible, but unlikely, that it damaged the BIOS. It's more likely that some part of the OS got damaged and that's what is causing the misread.
However, the important fact is that you have no proof currently that you have any Windows license at all :(

I am positive that the installed OS was genuine and have only had this activation issue since trying to update to Win 8 and then cleaning up and updating after the reversion to Win 7.

WATFix did not appear to do anything except load a browser hijacker, a lot of unwanted programs, viruses and malicious software! :-( :-( :-( I am in the process of cleaning up before I send an MGA Diag. I may have to revert to a restore point if I cannot get rid of the crap. I am now using another laptop to post this message.
