Sooo I have raked the internets for a solution, lots of suggestions tat work for some and not for iothers, everything i've tried seems to have failed. tried the randomly assigned network address change as detailed in the top post on this forum, tried ipconfig /release / renew etc etc.

On my laptop I can connect to my home network and the internet if i plug in directly to my router with a cable no problems.
however cant seem to connect to any wireless networks. i can connect to my home wireless with my iPhone and PS3 in the regular way with no problems.

use to have the same problem with vista however it would sporadically come and go.
router is a D-link dsl-2640R
laptop is a compaq presario V6500

here are the regular screenies

any help with this will be awesome as my laptop is currently paperweight with a fan on the bottom with no wireless.
cheers

Go into Services and confirm that Wlan Autoconfig service is started.

Does running mean started? Can you screenshot your network connections?

"wireless 2" would appear to be the wired connection which works

"lukes wireless" is the wireless network set up on the router which the laptop connects to successfully but will not talk to my home network or the interwebs

Ok so the connection to the router exists, but the connection from the rrouter to your modem/ISP doesn't exist (so does but no in the required capacity).

Is your modem set to DHCP-Autoconfig, and the router same?

When you say your home network, do you mean the network broadcasted by the router?

There are a few infos missing which we need to know, please run through how your network is setup.

mmkay

i have a desktop and my laptop, desktop is wired in to the router, and when the laptop is wired in i can access files from one to the other with no problems, both can also connect to the internet when set up this way.

its a dsl router so are the modem and router not one and the same? im not sure how to check if my modem set to DHCP-Autoconfig, but under lan on my router admin screen is tells me that the DCP server is "ON"

ok... i think... i have solved it.

right clicked on the wireles network that was not working
status
properties
went to properties on IPV 6 and set to obtain IP address automatically (some reason it was set to manual and no ip address in the box's_)-
did the same on IPV4 (cant remember which one was blank) and ping.. we have wireless

will see hhow it lasts but i think the problem is sorted.

when i connect to me router directly AND using the wireless network at the same time, i get both types of connections, under the same network name (that is my SSID name). I don't know why you have two different network names, when there is only 1 network. This could be a defining factor.

Can you also explain how the wireless 2 name come about?

Ps, cool that you checked the ipv4 setting, i always take it that people know what to do with this, lol.
