Solved Win Update service not running on new installation

I'm installing Win7 Pro 64bit on a new (empty) hard drive in my HP laptop. Windows Update won't run; the error message is "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your comptuer." (This is immediately after a restart.) The Software Update Readiness Tool also will not run, giving me error 0xc8000247. I've attached the zipped CBS logs. Services.msc says the Windows Update service is running (see attached screenshot). Thanks for any help you can give me.

Open Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Never Update...'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Now open Windows update again
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Update automatically'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates.

OK, now the "Most recent check for updates: Never" and "Updates were installed: Never" appears (see screenshot), which they did not before. But clicking on "Check for updates" gets no response at all. Nothing happens, not even an error message.

noel I wonder if a sfc /scannow would be useful for kfairchild??

Already been run - no SFC errors in the CBS.log
The 0xc8000247 error does bring another possibility to mind, though....

Please run an MGADiag report and post the results....

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=21730

(you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

That did it! Windows update is running, it installed 138 updates this afternoon, and everything that wouldn't install (because it needed .NET 4) is installed. Thank you for your help!
