Solved win7 blank

Hi all, I am a newbie on here and need idiot proof advice so please bear with me.
I have a Samsung R530 laptop, 32 bit, 4gb ram ddr3, Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4300.
The machine starts, gets to password page, sign in with password and press enter, welcome screen comes up for about 30 secs then goes blank/black and just hangs.
if I press control, alt, delete I can get into the task manager but when I close it the screen returns to blank/black
Can start machine in safe mode with networking and all ok. It's just when I start windows normally the problem occurs.
Also tried recovery to last working point with no joy.

I had a similar problem recently, but never got to password screen--laptop just kept rebooting. F8 and F12 options got me nowhere (Windows repair tried ten times to fix itself but gave up) so I eventually had to bite the bullet and reformat drive C:.:shock:

I'm not saying you'll have to do so, but IF YOU DO, be advised that a Linux disc will probably work fine to enable copying data from C: (and other partitions) to external hard drive. I was looking for a Knoppix disc but found a Ubuntu disc and despite the week-long inconvenience of Dell System Restore not working from discs I made when I first got the laptop, I am now A-OK.

You might use SAFE mode to restore to a previous point in time. Maybe a recent update or upgrade did you in.

(To do so: Start | All programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Restore. Note that you can request that more restore points be shown.)

Hi DSLOMER64, I have just sussed the problem.
For some reason there was a programme called PriceFountain installed on my laptop that I had never seen before. Where it came from I have no idea, but I uninstalled it and my machine is now up and running.
Thanks very much for your suggestion, even tho' it was a bit over my head.
I have a "very limited" knowledge of these machines but I must admit I like to play about and find faults if I can.

Restoring to a previous restore point is something to become familiar with. The process merely un-does any Windows updates and installations of programs and drivers and often enough (though rarely) will get you back up and running when all else fails. Every time a Windows update is performed (usually unknown to you and me) the files being replaced are saved for just such emergencies. This also usually happens when software is installed by YOU (and maybe not by whatever process installed the software you removed), so it can easily be removed via System restore.

The restore process is reversible. If you don't like what happens, that's an option offered next time you run System restore.

In fact, had you NOT found the app that was responsible, you likely would have HAD to use System restore. I'd advise going through the menu selections I outlined BUT NOT RESTORING since all is now OK, just to get a feel for what it's like, since sooner or later you probably will have to do this.

To be honest I have no idea why this is happening. You can search for "black screen of death" in forums, there are countless threads about the subject.
Some solutions:
- Boot with Last Known Good Configuration (F8 menu)
- Restore to a prior date (System Restore) - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html
- Scan for malware (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free)

- Check if explorer.exe is running and start from CTRL+ALT+DEL (task manager - new task)
- Verify in registry: HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsot\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon to make sure 'shell = explorer.exe'

- Try loading defaults in BIOS
