I recently noticed that I could not access any of my plub and play USB devices on my Windows 7 computer. I just also noticed that when I reboot, I know get a DOS message momentarily that says I am in IDE mode and my plug and play devices cannot be supported. It also provides me with the option to go to SATA by pressing "Y" while in DOS mode. There is a timer which times out and the it loads Win7.

I am not really sure what is going on.

1) Given that I used to be able to access my plug an play devices (exernal hard drives) have I somehow changed my BIOS settings?

2) Should I be clicking on "Y" while in DOS? Note I tried this and nothing happened.

3) Should I go directly into my BIOS and make the change. If so how?

Thanks

RK

If pressing Y did nothing, I'd try going directly into BIOS to make the change (if Dell BIOS actually allows that). When booting the Delete key will enter BIOS setup. If you cannot find the option in BIOS, we would still need your complete system specs to see if we can find the manual.

When you say "complete system specs" what else do you need from me?

You are misinterpeting that message in your BIOS. It means that in IDE mode, SATA drives can not be hot-swapped, where is this feature is supported under AHCI. That means it affects only non-system, SATA drives. It has absolutely no effect on USB devices.

If you are having trouble getting USB devices to be detected by your computer, that is a separate issue.
