So I purchased win7 about a month ago through their student program for $30, and I chose to do the download option. Does anybody have any idea if this will be available right at 12a, or later on in the day / the next day or so?

win741.com

that is the offer I am talking about

thanks!

Should be avialable after midnight this evening, I bet those servers will be busy so prepare yourself for a long download!

If you are a student have you checked to see if your school is a member of the Microsoft Academic Alliance? If so, you can get Windows 7 Pro for free through the schools MSDNAA page (some schools refer to it as ELMS, which is short for e-academy License Mangement System).

On the win741.com deal did you get Home Premium or Pro? <-- you are aware that it is an upgrade DVD, and not full version right? Although, the Vista Upgrade trick may work with the Win7 Upgrade also allowing you to do a clean install with the upgrade version.

I scanned the digitalriver site, which is the company that Win was directing these sales through, and it looks like I have to wait for a link to download via email, which could be awhile.

At the bottom of the one product page, it has this

Note: If you're not upgrading from Windows Vista Home Premium, you may need to perform a custom installation. Please visit this link to learn more-click here.

So it looks like they still support fresh installs :)

I ordered mine also and I am waiting for it!

My guess is they are doing it by order number pririty, which is stupid... they should do it by coast... since it is already past 12am Oct 22nd on the east coast it should hit here first.

A "Clean" install is different than what they are describing in your link... A clean install is a total format of your HDD, then you install everything; driver by driver, app by app.

I just did a little research and the workaround that we could get away with on Vista had apparently been removed! :(

Here is the information on the Vista Upgrade workaround: Microsoft Confirms Vista Upgrade Limitations (Updated with Workaround)

And here is the bad news: Windows 7 Upgrade Editions Will Require an Activated Copy for Verification Each Time its Installed | Maximum PC

What happened to the good old days of just "showing" the Upgrade you had previous CD or DVD by inserting it in your optical drive? Microsoft are you listening?

Well on that win7 upgrade chart that was floating around for awhile, it showed that you could upgrade from win xp, so I could install a fresh copy of xp then upgrade.

also, i heard you could upgrade from win7 beta, but tell it to do a fresh install then. I will read your links

Um if you read the comments section it looks like your find was disprooven by Harold Wong:

This looks like the way to go for me...
This is what Harold Wong of Microsoft posted in his blog
"2. Todd: If you purchased the Windows 7 Upgrade, you only need the
original media (CD / DVD) of Windows XP or Windows Vista. The Upgrade
media will ask you to insert the media from XP or Vista so it can
perform a check of the physical media before proceeding. Of course, if
you already have Windows Vista installed on the machine, it will just
allow you to perform an in-place upgrade."

I'll just have to keep my Vista DVD handy

Uh, No... sorry no direct upgrade from XP is available... never was! Here: Going from Windows XP to Windows 7? It's not pretty | Computing | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle
heres the chart - http://mossblog.allthingsd.com/files/2009/08/windows-upgrade-chart.png

read the fine print at the * at the bottom. they say if you are upgrading from an os older than xp, then you need to buy a full license.

I got it!!

Just FYI I just got an email saying my download of win7 was ready - and it's not even midnight here (central time zone) yet!

I am currently downloading the win7 installer at ~590k/sec (not bad at all!)

Have fun everyone!

I don't know if you guys know this but the "upgrade" through digital river or win741.com or whatever is a actual retail copy and not an upgrade that requires a previous version of windows to be installed on your computer.

I sent out an email a few weeks ago asking this same question.

"Shopper Comments: I wanted to know whether this deal was for the full
retail version of windows 7 professional 64 bit; or whether this was for
the upgrade version of Windows 7 professional 64 bit which requires a
previous version of Windows Vista or Windows XP to currently be
installed on your computer?"

"Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting the Windows 7 Offer online store.

We apologize for the confusion.

The Windows 7 offered in this promotion is a full version. You can
install this product even though you do not have a previous Operating
System installed in your computer or if you want to make a multi boot
using Windows 7. The "Upgrade" included in the product name is just
because Windows 7 is the latest Operating System Windows developed.

For more information please contact our pre-sales department at:

Wow they have upgrade all over their offer! That's good news for many who ordered or are considering ordering this great deal!

I did also find this MS employee blog: "If you purchased the Windows 7 Upgrade, you only need the original media (CD / DVD) of Windows XP or Windows Vista. The Upgrade media will ask you to insert the media from XP or Vista so it can perform a check of the physical media before proceeding. Of course, if you already have Windows Vista installed on the machine, it will just allow you to perform an in-place upgrade."

Heres the site: Harold Wong's Blog Site : Can I do an In-Place upgrade from Windows 7 Release Candidate To Release Code??

So I guess MS was listening and all you will have to do after backing up everything is to show a Win7 upgrade disk that you own XP or Vista by inserting the CD/DVD when asked! NICE

Bummer that you ordered it well before me - i ordered on oct 16.....

The good news is that the download is still going pretty quickly. I'm on a wireless and it's still steady at just over 600k

The subject of the email I just got was: "Windows 7 Offer - Product Now Available (Order #xxxxxxxxx)"

I'm sure it won't be long before some more of us get it!

Did your download url have a long hash in it? or was it pretty basic and included your order numbeer? I've been trying to trick the site (by going to "re-downloaded my purchased products" and putting in my order number) but its not working :P
