Running Windows 7 Home Premium x64
Cannot update, attempting to upgrade to Win 7 professional. Discovered automatic updates were fried for some time and the system did not have SP1, which is apparently required for the upgrade.

I see similar threads, each seems to require advanced individual registry repair so starting my own - if there is a generic fix please reply with it and I can give it a shot. I have tried the normal tools to fix without change- see below.

Symptoms:
Windows updates fails with an error code 8007370B - Windows Update encountered an unknown error

I have run SURT several times successfully
I have run Fixit 50202, MicrosoftFixit.wu.LB.133286320513446086.5.1.Run,
Each returns 'Repair Windows Update components' and 'Windows Update components must be repaired'
All claim to have fixed the problem (no change, naturally)
Attempted to run SFC /scannow from an elevated prompt and it fails with 'Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation'. Same behavior when attempted from Safe Boot.

Downloaded and attempted to install SP1 locally, both the all platforms version and the Win7 x64 version. Both fail with errors.

Ran the Norton remover tool and Macafee remover tool - think Norton came with the system but was never activated, ran the Macafee remover tool just to be sure.

Have renamed the Softwareupdate folder without any change.

Brink, Thanks for the fast response - I have run SURT several times successfully without fixing the problem. Just checked and the filename of the SURT I was using matches the one for my OS on your link.

Hello Carl and welcome to the forums

Thank you for letting me know what you have already tried. Not only does it show that you've put some time into this before turning to other for help which is great to see, but it also saves me time because I know what has and hasn't worked so far. In this case, nothing you could run would fix this issue. You have what's known as bit flips in your registry (where a 0 flips to a 1 and completely changes the character) - it's a form of corruption that can only be fixed by manually modifying your registry hive so thank you very much for attaching it. It's just gone past 4am and I need my beauty sleep but I'll get going with this first thing tomorrow :)

Hi Carl,

I have fixed all of the issues outlined in your CheckSUR log so hopefully this will get you up and running again!

Download this file please: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/16537616/Carl_B.zip

Save it to your Desktop. Then right click > Extract All... and extract the contents to your Desktop. There should be one file, COMPONENTS (with no extension).

Then navigate to this folder:

C:\Windows\system32\config\

In that folder, rename the file COMPONENTS to COMPONENTS.bak

Copy the COMPONENTS file from your Desktop to this folder, then reboot your computer please.

After you have rebooted, run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again and post the log please:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Tom, Thank you! I am travelling at this moment and away from the system but will be able to apply the fix Tuesday 3/14. I'll post the log immediately afterwards. Thank you again - I was certain that a wipe and rebuild was my only option. -C

Hi Carl,

That's much better, we're down to 3 errors now. Just for future reference, can you post logs here please? The reason I asked you to use SendSpace for your COMPONENTS hive was because it's a very large file which is well over the attachment size limit.

Hi Simon,

I'd be more than happy to help you out with this, but to prevent things from getting confusing, can you start a new thread of your own please?

Windows Updates & Activation - Windows 7 Help Forums

Make sure you include your CheckSUR log! Post a link to your thread here when you've made it and I'll see what I can do.
