Since you are going with the exact same edition as likely came preinstalled on the laptop you shouldn't run into any problem using the key on the sticker. The one main difference is simply adding the SP1 into the mix. If for some that should fail to activate with any invalid key problems then you would opt for the key from the download itself.

I think it's always better to do a clean install, with an integrated service pack. It saves alot of disc space. I just did one yesterday with Windows 7 Ultimate SP1. I also like to keep the automatic updates turned off immediately following a clean install. Then I install Internet Explorer 9, so I don't get all the IE-8 security updates. I do the same thing with Microsoft Office. I install Office, and then the latest Office service pack....THEN turn on automatic updates. I think I had maybe 5-6 automatic updates for all three applications combined. I like it nice and clean like that. It's an obsession....LOL

I like to keep automatic updates off until I'm ready too. Depending on the OS I'm installing, I also install the latest version of DirectX, Dot Net Framework, Internet Explorer, Media Player, Silverlight, and finally Microsoft Security Essentials. MSE turns auto updates on when you install it so I leave it for last. ;)

That's the confusing part. I do not have KB976932, yet my win ver shows "Ver6.1 (Build 7601:Service Pack 1, V.721)"

The next line says : Evaluation Copy, Expires 8/31/11 6:59. ???

Pre ordered and installed from Cd bought From newegg when it was first released.

Hello Meebers,

You have the SP1 RC (Release Candidate) version installed. This is not the final SP1 version.

You will need to uninstall the SP1 RC, then install the SP1 RTM (final version) afterwards.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Ok, I stand corrected. Did find "Win 7 SP1 RC Wave 1 for X64 (Kb976932) dated 11/13/2010 installed. This is not visible in the "uninstall or change program" line up. I guess my next try would be the elevated command "wusa.exe/uninstall/Kb:976932"?

Is this going to screw with all my programs etc?? I did notice a lot of SP1 updates after this, assume the uninstall will remove all of that and then after the RTM version will update whats left?? Tx for the help here. MikeG

Assume the expiration date was referring to the RC release??

This is also the case with the rtm where you may want to backup the backup before clean up in case you have a need to uninstall the finished version.

Meanwhile the one and only update now seen since the SP1 release is the Security update for the 64bit W7(KB2475792).

When looking for the service pack simply click on the "See also: Install Updates" at the bottom left when going into the Control Panel>Windows Updates. It will be listed there as "Service Pack for Microsoft Windows(KB976932)" without the quotes of course When looking under the Microsoft Windows heading there it should be right near the top being only one of the few recent updates.

I like to keep automatic updates off until I'm ready too. Depending on the OS I'm installing, I also install the latest version of DirectX, Dot Net Framework, Internet Explorer, Media Player, Silverlight, and finally Microsoft Security Essentials. MSE turns auto updates on when you install it so I leave it for last. ;)
That's a good plan of attack. I do the same, except I leave MS Office for last [I use Norton AV 2010] because it too enables the automatic updates. I just manually disable it before the system reboot after installing Office. I like to have the latest versions of all software installed before I enable automatic updates [but I ALWAYS end up enabling it]. It not only reduces the number of automatic updates, but it allows you to avoid installing useless updates that you won't be using. Nothing irritates me more than having software on my machine that I will NOT be using. That's probably my biggest pet peeve. ;)

That's probably my biggest pet peeve. ;)

I hear you about the useless software. I usually do office and its service pack(s)after windows is fully patched, not sure why, I just like doing it in a separate session. After that I do Flash, Java, and slowly pick away at the rest of the programs I use. Everything is grouped on color coded thumb drives so I just go though them one at a time in order.

That is exaactly what I do. I always want to get Win fully installed with all the updates before I install anything else. The next thing is MS Security Essentials then everything elese over the next few days.
Oh I make a mirror image of the fully installed Win7 with all updates just in case something happens.

I don't bother with that, because if something messes up I just do another clean install. It only takes me about 3 hours to do one, AND install all my programs [including all updates, but NOT including zeroing out the disc].

I keep all my documents, pictures, and things of that nature on a seperate drive, and just link to them. THAT drive I keep a backup of, but I do it manually on an external drive. That way all I have to do is reformat my C:\ drive if something messes up [which it never has yet]. This is just the way I like to do things. I would NEVER do a repair on my operating system. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing it messed up at one time or another.....LOL :D

Thats pretty well what I do too. A reinstall for me is usually due to new or swapped out hardware. I just as soon start fresh with new drivers etc. Mind you I'm not knocking making an image, I've thought about it, but just never bothered to actually do it. These days, installing everything from USB thumbdrives, I can be up and running on the internet in no time. I can remember when it took me all day, or even a couple of days to get everything the way I wanted it. Those are not fond memories.

Oh I make a mirror image of the fully installed Win7 with all updates just in case something happens.

With the softwares used here you only have so many times allowed to activate them which means a clean install could result in the need to buy a new license for some. Plus I have some work tied up in other projects. The full system image option is the obvious solution for that especially now that SP1 is on.

Another thing however is actually the rare need to perform a clean install. One replacement install last June due to swapping brands of memory right after getting this case up and an image restored back in Oct. when running a test on something.

Now that the SP is on a fresh image to replace the previous works well here. With the volume of programs and tools seen here it would take a few days to get everything back on individually not including any new updates to be seen.

I am still having mega problems with Win 7 SP1. After a successful installation I found the speech recognition program didn't work (I use this frequently) so I used system restore to get back where I was. I posted here and in the Microsoft Answers forum, where a MS Support Engineer told me to install it again with my Kaspersky turned off. I did this and the installation failed with the error code 800736B3, so I tried a clean boot install as instructed and got the same error code again. I used the MS FixIt which said there was a problem and it was fixed but it wasn't. Tried several more times and still got the same error code. At one point I got the message that my version of Windows was not genuine - it is and WGA validates this.

I reported all this back, saying the good news was that my computer was still running brilliantly but the bad news was that I cannot install Service Pack 1. (To my knowledge I have not modified or changed any files on my computer as I think may have been suggested on this forum. Only changes made would be through system restore). MSEngineer said he was pleased that the problem had been resolved and that it would help others with the same problem. Obviously, he read only the first line of my post.

Something is telling me that I would be better managing without it. I was going to download the standalone package but when I got into MS, I couldn't determine which was the right package. I have Win 7 Ultimate x64
