Win7 SP1 released to public

Dvd? XP came on cd-rs.
I'm aware of that. Your not following me. I said it was faster to do a clean install of XP with a 12x CD, than a clean install of Windows 7 with a 4x DVD. ;)

A 4x dvd? I installed 7 from the retail dvd in 20min. as usual. For the two prevvious versions(XP cd, Vista dvd) about 40min. The first few minutes isn't actual install time like you think but copy of the setup files over to the hard drive. The first restart then sees the installer load followed by the temp files being cleaned afterwards. (if you use the Windows install cleanup that is. :))

Now for comparing the SP install times with XP SP1 came on the first here while SP2+SP3 roughly 20min., Vista SP1=45, SP2=20, and now for the 7 SP1=50min. before restart and configuration.

Note that these are average times seen with the stand alone exe not any direct download/install through the MS updates when making the comparison.

That's odd. It only takes me half the time to install XP, than it does to install Windows 7. I'm talking about the entire install process, not just loading the setup files.

Odd is seeing it take more then 20 minutes for a 7 install even on an old XP build with a 2ghz cpu and 1gb of ram where one 512 had to be reseated for the 1gb total. When seeing a clean install of XP on that same case later try a good 40min with the same optical drive! Then another 20 for SP3 to finish that up.

Likewise eventually when the second SP for 7 is seen that will likely go on faster since the second stand alone SP always seem to be smaller in size then the first for each version. The first addresses the bugs and initial security fixes as well as enabling support for things often not even in consideration during the early development of each Windows version.

SP1 will be bringing a new Dynamic memory management for Hyper V just as SP1 for XP addressed the 137gb barrier back then. For Vista SP1 saw the full amount of memory reported in the system information when having more then 3+gb on the 32bit editions.

How does that saying go "Your mileage may vary". :D I'd say hardware, maybe even what version you're installing etc, will alter install times. How fast your optical drive is, how fast your hard drive is (read write times), there are lots of variables if you think about it long enough.

:D:D:D Computers are amusing things! I was working on two absolutely identical machines but one would accept a 1GB RAM stick and the other wouldn't recognise it. Computers may be logical but sometimes I just wonder... Maybe a slight error in one component was to blame!

BTW I tried Lunascape. Still have it installed but still use Firefox. No reason, just have got so used to it.

Speaking of "milage may vary" when restoring an older Vista laptop with a clean install there it took some 90min. to see that version's SP1 go on. The 1.6ghz cpu speed and 1gb of ram suggests one reason for the additional length of time it took! 120gb 5,400rpm drive and an 11hrs. total to get everything done!

Later the 120gb was replaced with a larger 500gb 7,200rpm model where an image of the 120 was restored to that. Since you couldn't expand the C primary out a second storage/backup partition was seen to in order to avoid another full install of everything including both SPs. The memory was replaced with a 2gb sodimm which helped but 90min. for an SP plus another 90min for all other updates once SP1 was on?! :p

The clean install of Windows was something as well as but not nearly as long reaching the desktop in just under an hour. XP would have been right up there close to that while 7 would have seen about 35min estimated still done in less time then the two previous but a ssssslowwww.... machine to work with!

Don't you just LOVE jobs like that? Grrrrrr!!!

I did the exact same thing for my little cousin when her Vista laptop crashed the OS. Windows 7 had just come out, so I did a clean install of that for her, instead of that garbage bloated Vista OS. That's by far the worst OS Microsoft has ever come out with. I hated that OS right from the get go. The only thing I liked was the new Aero, but other than that it really stunk. I can't begin to tell you how many of my family members systems I had to change from Vista to Windows 7.

I won't install Vista for anyone now. I don't care who it is.

I still don't understand how XP takes you longer to install than Windows 7. XP has always installed faster than 7 for me. Every single time. <scratches head>

"Vista the Disaster" - act in haste, repent in leisure. As I understand it Vista came out before the bugs had been removed because Mac had a swish new OS.

My husband bought a laptop with Vista and we had nothing but problems. We tried to return it to Asda but because we had had it well in excess of a month (actually several months of perseverance and trying to get it sorted!) they refused to refund the money and said we had to contact the manufacturers. Evesham had gone out of business two days prior to our Asda trip and when we informed Asda that we couldn't get the required support, after a check with Head Office, we got our money back. With some trouble we managed to get a laptop with the XP OS pay extra option from Hewlett Packard and it has given us no trouble. I have tried to persuade hubby to upgrade to Win 7 but his attitude is: if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

It is interesting, or so I have been told, that MS stopped Vista support before XP support.

My opinion is XP is OK, Win 7 is fantastic and Vista, well never, ever, ever again.

I love Win 7 with its goodies, and I don't think the release of Win 8 OS with its light core and virtual programs will entice me away.

Not at all! Tons of people hate it. There's still some who actually like it though. To each their own, you know? I do miss the "Dream Scenes" though. I really liked that one with the flowing river water.

Evesham had gone out of business two days prior to our Asda trip and when we informed Asda that we couldn't get the required support, after a check with Head Office, we got our money back.
Praise God! :D

XP is a really solid OS after SP2. I loved it the entire time I used it.

I have tried to persuade hubby to upgrade to Win 7 but his attitude is: if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
Well, any Microsoft OS that is no longer supported is "broken." Keep working on him, you won't regret going with Windows 7. Trust me!

I love Win 7 with its goodies, and I don't think the release of Win 8 OS with its light core and virtual programs will entice me away.
I do believe that Microsoft has finally created the perfect OS when it released Windows 7, and I'm a pretty tough critic. However, I'll most likely keep upgrading my OS when Microsoft releases new ones. Gotta' have the latest software, you know? ;)

I'm in no hurry though. I'm completely satisfied with Windows 7. OMG...did I just say that? LOL

120gb 5,400rpm drive and an 11hrs. total to get everything done!

Depends on installation methods used! If everything is all together such as XP having now seen the last SP included on the last available cds the only extra time is seen with the last of the updates released.

As far as which is best is matter of opinion while MS made the mistake of setting the miniimum requirement too low with Vista not that it wasn't a working OS but specs were set too low for OEMs who typically were seeing 512mb, 1gb premade over the 2-3gb better advised minimum.

Personally I found Vista far more stable and hardly any blue screens while with XP those were all too common. Unfortunately SP3 came too late since by then I was looking forward to examing what 7 would bring as well as waiting to test it once available.

Initially I thought 98 was a slow turtile until finally replacing 95. Ran that one for years eventually second with XP SP1 onto SP2.

7 however is MS looking at performance for the average desktop having far more OEM driver support available at the retail launch over what had been unfortunately for Vista but even worse for the 64bit XP!

So far no complaints with 7 and having it loaded up with anything and everything even seeing smooth results with SP1 on. Stable and still responsive making it the overall champ as far as Windows is concerned.

Long live "7"!!! :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

I still believe the majority of issues with Vista, certainly the support issues, aren't all on Microsoft. I think the entire industry was a complete joke at the time, getting working drivers was simpler on linux. There's a lot of blame to be thrown around for Vista, because it's an epic failure, but at least half if not more of it can be attributed to an industry that cares for nothing more than the bottom line, period.

There's a lot of blame to be thrown around for Vista, because it's an epic failure, but at least half if not more of it can be attributed to an industry that cares for nothing more than the bottom line, period.

There was quite a bit of turmoil at first once Vista was out and people where stuck without updates available at first for the then new version. 3rd party support sadly lacked for addon devices as well as your main hardwares!

With MS managed to pull some strings in wanting driver support readily available and did more to see the beta and RC releases more widely known by getting people to look at the new promos. It was still fortunate that 7 and Vista have the close compatibility however over what would typically be seen when each new version came out in the past including Vista where new drivers were always in need as well as newer versions for each software.

Talk about why businesses are slow at upgrading retooling all softwares with any newer version isn't in their bottom line budget at times. This is mainly where MS had focused on the previous versions while focus has shifted for 7 and next to come when looking at the typical user.

Now for 7 MS is pressing to see support and getting back on a schedule and why SP1 has gone from beta to final without a lengthy wait but in a reasonable time frame.

Just installed SP1 which took a about 90 minutes for everything. So far it seems more responsive & I'm using less CPU than before.
