Solved Win7 will not boot?

My first thought would be some sort of optimizing or cleaning program, do you use anything like that?

I've used CCleaner for many years for cookies, but I don't use the Registry part. Never had this problem with Windows 7. Lots of problems with XP Media Centre.

Also just changed my anti virus and firewall to Avast 2015 (paid version).

I'll see if I can figure out Mint to grab my data.

Yes Linux is quite capable of reading a disk with windows on it,
It does require a machine to download a Linux iso and installing it to a flash drive or cd

The machines system restore to a factory state you might need to refer to asus site for exact steps,
It could be F10 for a 32 bit system or F12 for 64 bit
All your files would be lost so save that for after you attempt to recover your data with either Linux tutorial.

Don't bother reinstalling on the same hdd
Buy a new one smaller 500gb should be plenty and think about a ssd

I wouldn't think either of those would cause this, but i won't say never.

I have a Thermaltake Black X docking station for my external hard drives (manual backups). Can I use this to extract my data from the existing HDD? Then, as you recommended, replace the existing HDD or SSD.

I can do clean install since the recovery partition might be corrupt as well.

I take this docking station is not always connected to the machine ? = hope not
Was it connected when the booting issue arrived ?

No not connected At the time. Only use it as a manual backup for my data files. Sadly, I haven't backed up my files since June or earlier. Therefore, unless the HDD is damaged, I assume I should be able to retrieve the current data on it???

I agree all drives should be readable to Linux and should be the next step besides asking asus for a recovery disk of the win-7 install so you can reinstall win-7 clean,

Worst case you might have to buy a new oem/ system builders copy of win-7 along with a new hdd or ssd
Seeing you're in the uk win-7 might be a little scares ?
Hopefully asus can help but I have no idea how old this machine is ?

A pretty wild idea if you get mint
You might be able to install along side win-7 = possibly
And mint might be able to fix what ever is off on the boot loader ?

Computer is three years old this November. I had the Windows 7 full software but used it on my sister's computer after the kids did a number on it. I'm stuck with the ISO copy from ASUS which doesn't provide a repair Windows option.

It would be odd if it did not have startup repair but you would of had to install 7 with it for it to work I believe ?

Hi,
Please do almost time for bed time here

But if you have a spare hdd already you can clean install on it and take ownership of the defunct hdd and recover the files you don't have (if) neither startup repair or repair install don't work

Then you're back playing with Linux and seeing what it can see and do with the hdd either installing along side (if) and after you do recover the files you're missing since June or July :/

If you get your data off it with a linux distro and then want to use recovery then you would hit F9 at boot up and it will launch the asus recovery so you can factory reset it if that is what you want.

have you been playing aroiund in the registry? because I just had a look at that type of BSOD error and it can be caused by someone deleting something important in the registry

Nope! I did remove Trend Micro from my system prior to installing Avast.

TrendMicro and any IOBit products have a scary past with corrupting windows

In most cases a clean install is all that can fix

It's the only significant change on computer in ages. So I have to agree.

I'll remove the HDD and use my Docking station on a friends computer to retrieve my data. Hopefully that will work.

As I mentioned, I'll let everyone know what happens.

Depends but if not going to salvage the hdd or win-7 install just take ownership of the entire drive

Which folders do you get a prompt where you don't have permissions ?
