Win7 x64 persistent explorer.exe "crashes"

Hi All;

I'm having the exact same explorer.exe problem as Porkrinds' in http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/26108-windows-7-pro-x64-explorer-exe-crashing.html .

I'm amazed at how similar the symptoms are - happened right after the install, is highly associated with right-click, kind of random but sort of reproducible, happens in aero or classic. It's good to know I am not alone!

I have an Nvidia Quadro FX 570. Windows 7 seems to have found the latest drivers during the install.



For some odd reason, the bug seems to know when I'm about to shutdown - this is weird - as I start to close all my windows prior to start/shutdown, when I close the last window I will almost always get the explorer crash! "cue twilight-zone do-de-do-doo-do-de-do-doo ":shock:

I've been reading about debugger and generating dump files. I'm going to try that in a few minutes, but first I have some question for Citizen SulphericAcid (H2SO4) or other gurus.

I've found two files associated x64 debuggers.

299,734,528 Windows_Win7.7600.16385.090713-1255.X64FRE.Symbols.msi

As a Windows 7 padawan I'd like to learn how to analyze my own dumps (why does that sound unsavory?!?), but I know I have a lot to learn. I've started by reading this:

I've managed to get Windbg running, and the Windows 7-64 symbols installed. I've been looking at some of the dumps posted on this thread, but I think I need the symbols for explorer.exe. From Analyzing a User-Mode Dump File with WinDbg :

"You will also need to install all the symbol files for the user-mode process, either an application or system service, that caused the system to generate the dump file. If this code was written by you, the symbol files should have been generated when the code was compiled and linked. If this is commercial code, check on the product CD-ROM or contact the software manufacturer for these particular symbol files."

Anyone know if I do need those extra symbols for explorer.exe, and if so, where I can find them?

I imagine other guys know much more than me I just know enough to usually find the crashing file. You can also run the symbols off of the MS server which is listed here
Use the Microsoft Symbol Server to obtain debug symbol files

Generally I start WinDdg and go to the file menu, then click on "Open Crash Dump" then navigate to the dump file. One you click open on the file it will start to run in the window and display information about what it finds in the dump file. I thought I had a nice example for you but the application crashes I currently have I do not have the symbols loaded for them.

Usually the print out is something like this example WinDbg real world example

He explains a bit about what he finds in that dump. To me system crashes are a bit easier to review than application crashes and it's mostly from my lack of experience

Once you have a dump, upload it and it maybe easier to explain on your dump file

Hi;

Sorry it took so long to provide feedback on this. On another thread, someone suggested the problem might be due to 7zip x64's context menus. I uninstalled 7zip x64, and re-installed it without the Explorer context menus. Have not had a single crash in many months. A little sad without the context, but 7zip is still usable.
