I HAD this problem with my computer as well. although I am still having many problems with my Windows 7 machine and I am ready to go back to XP, I got the sound to work by doing 2 things. I am not sure which one was the solution - but I upgraded to a more powerful video card (NVidia GTS250) and I removed my VLC video program. I am using and RME Hammerfal system with external 0-CPU external box. Until the other day I only got stereo.

But my computer video still crashes regularly!

i also have a realteck hd and the fill speakers gave my a distortion in the rear, using romm makes the rear speakers barely audible
so i'm using 3d sound back and it works like a charme
you have to go in the property's and tell it to run with admin avec vista sp2 compatability
it wont work with wmp thats the only issue i had so far

Same Issue, Winamp solution worked

Hey All,

First of all, same issue as the rest of you. Rear speakers on my Logitech 5.1 setup work fine while testing but don't work in any other Windows 7 programs.

Second, I was able to get Winamp working correctly on all speakers using the VL Sound for Vista plugin. At least my music works correctly now...

Thanks for sharing in my suffering everyone. :_(

So there still isn't any apparent fix for this? When is microsoft going to fix this!
It was fine in xp and the crummy speaker fill is an excuse for sound.

Thank you!!!!!!!

I was looking for a multi output plugin for winamp that could work on Windows 7 for months.

BTW, I'm also pissed by the lame speaker fill option

I too had a bit of problem trying to get my Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 speaker system working after the installation of Windows 7. The centre speaker and the subwoofer would not work despite uninstalling and reinstalling the latest drivers. The problem was my own stupid error, I had the colour coded jacks in the wrong connections at the back of the PC Tower unit. So wise ones do check this simple error that can easily be overlooked when in a hurry. Since the swap of jacks, I've not had any issues at all all 5.1 speaker system works fine. Good Luck.:D

Hi guys i have a problem with my Realtek audio driver with Windows 7. I have an Acer 6920g and i'm trying to get it to send 5.1 to my home theater system using it's HDMI port. I have a Denon 1910 receiver btw and it does receiver the video signal from the HDMI port but only receive stereo from the laptop and not 5.1. If i use my X-530 speakers on the 6920g it reads those fine as 5.1 using the 3 3.5mm jacks; but when i try to use the HDMI signal it only says stereo and will not let me change it nor does the 5.1 option appear. I updated to the newest Realtek driver. Anyone know how can i fix this as i wanna be able to get real 5.1 from the laptop to my home theater system.

had a hard time dealing with this 5.1 issue as well with my mobo's (gigabyte GA-MA78GM-DS2H) built-in 5.1 audio but finally made the darn thing work. Anyway to cut things short download the latest realtek driver (not sure if it work with older realtek drivers) then on the realtek sound manager click the speakers tab, then under that click the room correction tab. now look at the rear/side speaker (whcihever configuration you're at) then see the gain input box underneath the distance input box, adjust the value all the way up to +10db(max) or lower depending on your loudness preference. your rear/side speakers should now work during music/movie playback. That's all. hope this helps.

when ever you installl new audio driver it will change your default audio playback settings so it wise after installing anything to right click the speaker icon lower left toolbar after do that you will see a selection off choices. select playback devices "a tip when doing this" play a audio file so you can see which default devices is playing by the green scale moving. once you found the new device install click on it make it you defualt device the click configure to select stero. 5.1 surround or 7.1 surround click next to make sure all your setting are the way you like them then click OK allsorted

Any luck with this? It's been about a year and a half since the original post. I have the same problem except I am using 2 different 2 channel setups. One is my main PC speakers and the other is my hi-fi home stereo which I had been running out of the black connection for the rear left and right. Worked great in Windows XP...Switched to Windows 7 Pro 64bit last week and well....The test function works fine but nothing else. Music through Winamp sounds terrible with the speaker fill.

I emailed realtek's USA support and got:

Dear Sir,
The speaker fill function is designed by Microsoft not Realtek.
It simulated a surround sound not just a copy from front channel.

If you want just COPY from front channel. We recommend you change OS back to WinXP.

Best regards,
PC-Tech

I think asked how to copy channels...

Dear Sir,
You can not do it in Win7.
We recommend you change OS back to WinXP.

Best regards,
PC-Tech

The best way that I know to copy the front channel is through the Realtek HD Audio Manager.

First open it up.

one.png

Figure out which is your front and rear channels.

Two.png

Right Click on your rear channel and select 'Connector Retasking'

Three.png

and change it from 'Rear Speaker out' to 'Front Speaker Out'

Four.png

That would effectivly make all your 2.1 sounds into 4.1(you can do the same to your center channel to make it 5.1) even if you're using software that can play 5.1, like games.

The main draw back for me is that this makes true 5.1 sound bad. I play a lot of games that use 5.1, I can't leave my system this way.

I do not have a connector retasking option when I right click. All I have is "audio device settings" and when I select this option, nothing happens.

I don't have 5.1, so all I care about is making all speakers work at the same time. Are you using the software that came with your motherboard? My mobo driver CD does not work with Windows 7 so I had to download the realtek drivers from their website...Maybe the newer version does not allow connector retasking???
