Hi,

I have a HP Pavilion DV6-1330ev Laptop
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T6600
Intel® Centrino® processor technology
2.2 Ghz, Level 2 cache 2 MB
320 GB Hitachi TravelStar 7k500 SATA Hard Disk Drive 7200 rpm
3GB DDR3
Windows 7 home premium 64bit
ATI Radeon HD 4530 Graphics

A few days ago,my laptop was working fine..when suddenly it started to hang up..i tried to logoff but it dosent...i waited for 15 min but it didnt respond...then i force shutdown it..when i restarted it,it showed up with BSOD saying "unmountable_boot-volume"
and then restarts itself again...it came up with "windows has failed to logon" i selected "Startup Repair"
it took 2 days continuously repairing it up...but it goes on for "attempting repairs''...finally.i lost my patience and press cancel..it hanged up again..i restarted my PC it again came up with BSOD again mentioned above.

When i tried to run startup repair, this time it wont start...
Then i tried to load windows in safe mode,no luck,in safe mood with command prompt to run chkdsk, but i wont load..it stuck up at driver.sys...

Then i googgled up,to find out any solution..
I came up with a solution of starting my PC with windows repair cd..
i gave it a try also..but the windows startup wont load....i waited for more than 10hrs but it didnt came up..
Then i tried System Diagnostics (F2)...and came up with
" Hard Disk Test
Hard Disk 1
Quick (303)
Hard Disk Test Failed"

I googled up again,i got an answer to run tools for checking up my hard drive,i downloaded DFT from Hitachi and run it ...but it wont..it stuck up with a cursor blinking and saying "Loading DFT"...i waited for 2 hrs but nothing happens...

Then i ran seagate tools..it runs..check for errors ...it came up with answer : Bad Sectors Found..
then i ran up advance test to repair bad sectors..it repaired 2 sectors and then : "Repair Failed Bad Sectors Found.."

i was just googling up to see if Bad sectors Can be repaired...
i found HDD Regenerator..but i dont know if it can really repair Bad Sectors on my hard drive..

I have 2 qs to ask...
First of all, i have alot of important data on my hard drive...
1) should i first go for HDD Regenerator to repair Bad Sectors...
Or 2)Should i backup my data....?

if,i should backup my data first...there are many qs on my mind..
1)which software would be the best for backing up data...?
2) should i clone my hard disk or create an image of my hard disk?
3)or should i use ubuntu to back up my data...

Your help is all what i need...:(

Use your Ubuntu Live CD

Back up your files BEFORE attempting any repairs.

I would suggest that you use your Live Ubuntu CD to copy your files onto an external drive.

Since the drive tests you did indicate a failed drive, it may not be possible to recover your files with "normal" means. If you can't access/read the drive from another drive with Ubuntu you'll most likely have to get professional forensics help to recover. IT is VERY expensive.

Hitachi DFT is an excellent test but obviously it has to be run from CD and not from the very HD it needs to repair. So download the ISO and slow burn to CD, boot it and see if you can repair the HD at least enough to copy your files off.

Ubuntu can read many file systems

Ubuntu can read many file systems (including NTFS).
I think that most Linux Live CDs can do it.
I can access any files on my NTFS partitions, when I am in Ubuntu.

You should be able to access any Windows drive/partition.

Of course if the drive is dead it won't help. :)

If you can get any function out of the HD such as to clone or test it using Hitachi Fitness Test then you can copy out your files using the Win7 DVD or Repair CD, or free Paragon Rescue CD. Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console
Paragon Rescue CD

If so, I would copy out my files now then run the bootable Hitachi HD diagnostics repeatedly to see if it will repair.

Have you correctly burned the Hitachi DFT ISO to a CD using Windows Image Burner or ImgBurn? If so boot it and see if it recognizes HD. Is HD also seen in BIOS setup?

I would download ubuntu 10.10 and the burn it to cd. Boot up and select use ubuntu without install. After it boots as long as the hard drive isn't completely borked (not likely) you will have access to all the files. Just open the file manager and locate your ntsf volume (pretty easy). Navigate through the folders and copy and paste to a usb and then try to re install windows.

Depends on how confident you feel (about using Linux and the Terminal).

If you are sure that you have saved everything important, you can try the procedure described in this article:
Ubuntu+disk+tool+repair+ntfs | Laptop Driver, Computer Software, Smartphone Apps

Note:
I haven't tried this procedure. Use at your own discretion.

I think there is an error/omission in the description.

I think that this command:
sudo lilo -M /dev/ mbr
Should actually read:
sudo lilo -M /dev/<device name> mbr
He also describes some things strangely.

He wrote:
"Replace <device name> with your Windows partition (e.g. /dev/sda2) and hit Enter."
IMO, he should have written:
"Replace /dev/<device name> with your Windows partition (e.g. /dev/sda2) and hit Enter."

I have just tried this procedure...but still BSOD comes up with Unmountable_Boot_Volume error...

well by using ubuntu 11.04 disk utility i have found that my hard disk has 917663 bad sectors..

Is there any command to fix these bad sectors using ubuntu? i have heard about fsck or something like that...?

Or

Should i use "HDD Regenerator" to repair my hard disk boot sectors?
i have heard that it fixes some of the bad sectors....

Another option would be to take the drive out and slave it into another PC. Then use that PC's OS to copy any data you can to another drive. Once you have recovered what you can, erase the drive and junk it. Then replace it with a new one.

Why are you using Linux tools on Win7? This is a Win7 forum.

I gave you the steps to copy out your data using the Win7 DVD or Repair CD which is just as simple.

We have been waiting for you to run the Hitachi Drive Fitness test, perhaps the very best extended HD diagnostics and repair scan in the business.

Instead of using another OS's tools, please focus on burning the HDFT ISO file to DVD using Windows Image Burner or Imgburn, booting it and running the Extended test.

Why are you using Linux tools on Win7? This is a Win7 forum.

He can run Linux off of a CD (no HDD required).

I had a version of Windows that would run from a CD (many years ago) but I haven't' heard of any new versions (Vista or Windows 7) that do it.

Instead of using another OS's tools, please focus on burning the HDFT ISO file to DVD using Windows Image Burner or Imgburn, booting it and running the Extended test.

If he doesn't have another Windows PC, how is he going to create a DVD using Windows tools (Windows Image Burner or Imgburn)?

He would need to find another computer to burn the HD test, just as he would to burn a Linux disk. Being able to fix serious problems such as this require access to another computer for these reasons.
