diablofan im not sure where that setting is in prime95 but yes when i find it i will try and post back.
also i am running prime95 right now and asus probe says 85c and real temp says 95-100c so im confused once again lol.:D

idle is like 55-60c

also i have power management off completly

Actually that isn't normal at all. Even when overclocking you should not exeed 85C. For a stock system both your idle and load temps are much higher than they should be. My highly overclocked system never gets close to that hot. Maybe the TJmax was not set correctly in real temp? Supposed to be set at 100C for tjmax and nahalem.

A minor observation. this thread was started for win 7 64 bit random lockups and has been turned into a discussion of Overclocking, testing, etc. It would have been better to start a different thread abt OC. Someone searching for random lockups would be confused reading this thread

so only being able to run prime95 for like 2min before my cpu hits 95-97 deg. is normal? it does not lock up just heat goes up very rapidly. whats the max heat for i940 cause i cant find a straight answer no where.:D ty antman

Higher temps are normal, but 95-97 deg centigrade is definitely critical!!

Modern CPU's with stock coolers should be somewhere between 55 and 80 degrees at full load (80 being quite high)

My hottest system (dualcore) reaches a maximum of 57 degrees at 100% load. This is at 22 degrees room temperature.
My coolest system (quadcore) reaches 50 at full load.

I have paid a lot of attention to the fans and airflow, and have picked good designed cases to work with. (Antec)

95 degrees hot air being blown into your case is also damaging to the surrounding electronics, and not to forget, your harddrives etc.

I think there is definitely something wrong with your rig.
Might be lack of airflow, lack of incoming and outgoing air.
And it could also indicate your CPU cooler in not placed level on your CPU.

I've seen a few cases where the cooler body touched the plastic retainer and didn't fully touch the surface of the CPU.
It could also mean the fans are turning to slow.

Anyway, you will definitely have to address this heat problem, because in the long run several parts of the system might get damaged.

good luck.

The Auto voltages should work pretty well for the cpu but I would set the memory voltage manually because the Auto settings hardly ever get that right.

Your CPU is getting way too hot for running at stock specs. I help people overclock and they do not allow the CPU to exeed 85C and those are highly overclocked systems. With your idle well into the 50's and loaded at 95-100C? That is just not right for a stock CPU or even an overclocked CPU. Thats too hot even for i7.

I would take out the CPU and reapply the TIM "thermal interface material" and then make sure the cpu heatsink fan is running fast enough to keep it cool. You may also need to work on your case flow a bit.

I'm not sure why it's running that hot and it's difficult to speculate from here but I would put that at priority one then go from there.

With due respect, we aren't overclocking anything here. He has a temp problem period.

The temps he is seeing can easily cause lock ups. I'm not confused one bit.

Thanks for jumping on the band wagon but give me a bit of credit here. I know just what temps these I7's like and don't like and he is way past the temp limit here no doubt about it so I'm glad you agree. I don't know why nobody has caught this until now.

I simply assumed that he was referring to the NB with the 95.

Glad you agree LOL 95C for a CPU running stock specs is just so not right. IN fact even the NB running at 95C will cause instablity and lock ups.

60+ posts back... reset all voltages to default. The problem likely lies elsewhere.

That's quite simple.

He never mentioned his temps.

Previous posters have pointed him in this direction.

I honestly don't know why you would feel discredited, because I suggested nothing of the sort in your, or anybody's direction.

There was one poster that said 95-97 degrees was normal, and I thought I had to correct that view.
I type a little slower than you I guess, so my post was right after yours, and definitely not a reaction to anything you said.

If you read back all the way to the start of this thread, you'll find I've been trying to help the OP from the beginning, and not jumping on any band wagon.

We have to work with the information an OP provides, and go from there.
Our insight increases and changes with each post.

Turn your machine off. At a minimum, properly reapply new thermal paste.

Well I sure never told you to push up any voltages and like I said before the default voltage for the CPU are fine for now. I don't know who told you to overclock or raise the CPU voltage but it sure wasn't me.

In any event your temps are way too high for a stock system, in fact they are too high for any system stock or overclocked. Yes temps that high will cause your system to freeze up or shut down.

Don't bother running Prime if your CPU is running at 100C. You can damage your CPU easily at those temps.

I believe we both saw that and were typing at the same time. It sure stood out to me as a problem.

Anyway I believe that the Op has all the help he needs so I shall bow out and let the experts handle it. :)

Keep your chins up ZigZag and upright walking cat rodent thing...

The OP is largely responsible for the meandering deviations in this thread.

It is reasonable to conclude that excess heat is the cause of the OP problem. Let's reset.

Windew420 - you are having a problem that may very jeopardize your investment.

At some point in this thread, you had a stable system with default BIOS settings. Do you have temp readings for those conditions. DO NOT RUN PRIME95.
