Windows 7 and WLAN with WPA-PSK Encryption

Hello Everybody!

I've got a problem with Windows 7 Ultimate RTM and wireless LAN on my Lenovo 3000 N200 Notebook with Intel 3945abg wireless chip....

I can't connect to wpa-psk encrypted networks although I installed the newest driver from intel and tried an older version, too. The network adapter is installed correct in the device manager...


If i use no encryption or WEP there is no problem, but i must use WPA-PSK...

The network settings on my notebook and on the accesspoint are 100% correct, and it worked fine with Windows Vista and the same hardware...

Please help me and sorry for my bad english...

What type of router do you have?try updating the firmware on it and see if that fixes the problem. well before you do that does any of the wpa security work tho?

More information would be helpful. Does your laptop actually support WPA? (I have a pair of HP iPaqs that supposedly support WPA - but i I enable it on my router they always fail to connect. I was forced to use only WEP.

Also, My sister has a laptop with Symantec Endpoint Security on it - and her machine refuses to connect to WPA on my D-Link, but she says (claims) that it it works on her LinkSys....

Yes, my notebook had support WPA encryption. I changed nothing on the router and with Windows Vista everything was alright. It's a Windows 7 issue.

//Edit.: I had tried it on 2 differnt routers, WEP is working, WPA not...

I also have this problem. I have a Fulitsu LifeBook 4215. It connected using wpa-psk under Vista. I recently upgraded the OS to Win 7. In trying to connect to the WLAN, I can't see wpa-psk as a protocol option. I've tried each of the wpa / wpa2 options without success.

What wifi card do you have in your laptop? Did you install Fujitsu drivers for it, or did you let Windows find and install the drivers? If you let Windows do it, you might want to install Fujitsu provided drivers - visit the support website and see if there are Windows 7 drivers for your wifi card. If there aren't any, use the Vista drivers and install in compatibility mode.

I just connected successfully. I'll talk through the steps, which are a bit bizarre, because there's nothing terribly much different that what I'd been doing before.

I had tried using WPA-personal TKIP and WPA2-personal TKIP, with the right password. No luck.

What I did this time:
* powered off and on the wireless router and modem (which shouldn't have affected things - other computers were successfully using them)
* on the connection properties dialog, checked the option to connect to the router even if it's not broadcasting its SSID (which it was, as I could see it in Win 7 - but I had not tried this before)
* selected WPA2-PERSONAL with TKIP
* checked the option to show characters (which should make no difference, and I had checked this before anyway)
* entered the password

And it connected immediately. The only things different were the reboot of the modem and router, and the checking of the option to connect to the router even if it was not broadcasting its SSID.

Go figure...if anyone can explain this I'ld be grateful.

More to the 'go figure' phrase I used. It worked yesterday...but not today. No settings changed. Given I've only just installed WIn 7, can't speak for whatever Windows Update may have done. I'll try Kegobeer's advice on trying the Vista driver.

...when I reboot the (Netgear) router, I can get a connection. But now the router is dropping connections for other (Win XP and Vista) machines on the WLAN as well, and it's intermittent. Right at the moment, all machines are connected and working.

One thing I notice. no one has mentioned disabling IPv6 in sharing and network. Its the cause of random disconnects every where.

Working intermittently

As you did, I tried disabling IP6 and it made very little difference.

My connection is working intermittently. It seems to be more consistantly connecting after I have rebooted both the wireless router and the PC. Once connected, it seems to work just fine, for days and days. Then I'll go away (the PC concerned is a notebook), but when I return I am back into the world of the disconnected again.

No joy for anyone with this type of problem, by the looks of things. There are very few who seem to have this problem, but thse of us who do find it's persistant. I can see no common factor, although there has to be one somewhere!

i have the same problem on my Samsung n140 netbook. i dual boot with Ubuntu 9.10 and Ubuntu connects fine with WPA.

installed the latest Realtek drivers for Win7 and ive also tried to roll back to the older ones that came with the Samsung installation CD. still no luck.

I had a similar problem with my XP comp. I managed to solve the problem with the WPA encryption, however im still having the issues with connection dropping solely under high traffic and wirelessly.

While i was talking to a script monkey, i was told repetedly that windows xp does not support the WPA encryption, which didnt make sence to me as i was using it prior on an xp home system. While troubleshooting on my on, i managed to figure out what i think that tech was trying to say but didnt understand himself.

you need to use a seperate program to handle your wireless connection in order to use the WPA encryption.

for my settings, this meant that i had to use the dlink configuration tool that comes with the adapter. another program that is universal that should do the same is a program called Wefi.

as for the connection dropping i was figuring it was my router as it is getting old, but if anyone else figures out the issue please share!

The security starts with the Wireless Router/Access Point.
The Wireless Router has to be set to a certain level and all the clients
have to follow.
If even one of the clients can not follow, the setting of the Wireless
Router's security has to be reduced.
From the weakest to the strongest, Wireless security capacity is.
No Security
MAC______(Band Aid if nothing else is available).
WEP64____(Easy, to "Brake" by knowledgeable people).
WEP128___(A little Harder, but "Hackable" too).
WPA-PSK__(Very Hard to Brake ).
WPA-AES__(Not functionally Breakable)
WPA2____ (Not functionally Breakable).
Note 1: WPA-AES the the current entry level rendition of WPA2.
Note 2: If you use WinXP and did not updated it you would have to download
the WPA2 patch from Microsoft. <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893357>
The documentation of your Wireless devices (Wireless Router, and Wireless
Computer's Card) should state the type of security that is available with
your Wireless hardware.
All devices MUST be set to the same security level using the same pass
phrase.
Therefore the security must be set according what ever is the best possible
of one of the Wireless devices.
I.e. even if most of your system might be capable to be configured to the
max. with WPA2, but one device is only capable to be configured to max . of
WEP, to whole system must be configured to WEP.
If you need more good security and one device (like a Wireless card that can
do WEP only) is holding better security for the whole Network, replace the
device with a better one.

WPA-PSK TKIP woes with Win7 Pro

I've suspended implementing WPA-PSK TKIP (and reconciled to WEP security with 40/64-bit (10 hex digits) encryption ) after spending, in vain, 90 minutes with 2 levels of HP Tech. Support.

My config.-

. Brand New HP Pavilion Desktop running Windoze 7 Professional
. Wireless-N LAN Card (Part# FJ217AV - OEM by Lite-On Technology Corp., Driver by Ralink echnology, COrp. 5/19/2009 version 3.0.1.0)
. Linksys WRT310N Firmware Version: v1.0.07 build 014-LS-HND Dec 16, 2008

HP is suggesting that since the card works with WEP, it's NOT a hardware problem on their end and would like me to burn more of my time with Linksys or MS support, yeah right !:sarc:

I would really like to revert to WPA-PSK - hopefully soon!

Lancaster - did u try WPA (not 2) with TKIP after power-cycling the router - what did u observe?

eeepc 901 windows 7 (win 7) upgrade WLAN problems

I too had problems when upgrading my Windows XP machine to Windows 7 on an EeePC 901.

I changed absolutely nothing else apart from installing the new operating system. No changes on the router, no hardware changes on the EeePC, latest Ralink drivers for my machine (think they were patched XP drivers or something)

The symptom was that i could see all of the wireless networks around me, but could not connect to the network i used to connect to using the correct WPA key, regardless of what Key type (WEP, WPA, WPA2) and what encryption type (TKIP, AES) i selected. The network at best would connect but would warn that there was a problem with the connection and no network traffic would be exchanged.

Cut a long story short, I found that it appears that Win7 just handles the WPA security differently to XP such that the router needs to be configured differently in order to support your new Windows 7 machine.

We have a D-Link DSL2740B which is an ADSL2+ modem router with wireless N (i think).

On the admin page for this router, under Setup\Wireless Settings\Manual Wireless COnnection Setup, you can see a gamut of options. The key ones for us are the Wireless Security Mode section and the Auto (WPA OR WPA2) sections.

We were formerly running on Security Mode 'WPA2', and I changed this to 'Auto (WPA or WPA2)', and probably unnecessarily, I ensured that the below WPA Mode was listed as 'WPA/WPA2-PSK (Personal)'

The instructions above the selection boxes state "...Use Auto(WPA or WPA2) mode to achieve a balance of strong security and best compatibility. This mode uses WPA for legacy clients while maintaining higher security with stations that are WPA2 capable..."

So, I think the solution to the problem of the wireless network security no longer working when all you have done is installed Windows 7 on a formerly connected machine, is to ensure that your router is configured to support both WPA/WPA2 and hence support both legacy and new strong security connections to it.

I honestly dont know whether Windows 7 would qualify in this picture as a 'legacy' or a newer stronger security connection, and I dont care. The connection works and I'm blissful.
