Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine..when it is!

We have a desktop and a laptop. Both run Win 7 Home Premium 32-bit with SP1 update. They were both updated from Vista a long time ago using genuine retail MS DVDs. Until recently they have both run perfectly (much better than Vista!).

The desktop recently started to display the message: "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine". I posted a question on the Microsoft Forum. Noel D Paton kindly replied with helpful suggestions, including doing a repair install. I downloaded 'X17-24208.iso', burned it to a DVD and attempted the install. After about 6 hours over night the install failed. 'Windows could not configure one or more system components. To install Windows restart the computer and then restart the installation'. It reverted to the old setup.:(

Not to be beaten, I then downloaded and ran 'MS Win 7 Upgrade Advisor' as it suggested. It found one incompatible program, and gave it a red cross symbol; I removed it. I also updated a driver as it suggested and I removed iTunes after first de-registering this PC. There were three programs mentioned as having no capability information; I could not find them. I then re-ran the installation from 2 pm to 7:30 pm. Everything was working well and looking hopeful until the last stage 'Transferring files, Settings and Programs'. To my astonishment (and annoyance!) it failed again!! The message again is: 'Windows could not configure one or more system components. To install Windows restart the computer and then restart the installation'. Again it reverted to the old setup... that was about 2 weeks ago. I wasted almost the whole weekend  .... (Life is too short. Perhaps I should change to Mac)

Now it is refusing to do any Windows Updates "Windows could not search for new updates" Error C0000034. The last update successful was on 14 Sept 2014.

Any help will be VERY welcome. Here is the MGADiag:

is the source of your problem.
This type of error is often associated with disk problems, or permissions problems

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the ElevatedCommand Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, pressEnter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive,so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possiblyafter a second auto-reboot) -

then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker -Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the ElevatedCommand Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages -and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created(C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate itdirectly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Publicfolder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Then attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate using Internet Explorer - what happens?

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messagesencountered.

Hight Noel I have a thought to run by you.
Would updating the bios if possible to a bios dated after Windows 7 came out be helpful.

Hello Noel,
Yes I eventually took your advice. I've been busy doing other things in the meantime, trying to ignore the irritating messages from my PC!

I ran the CHKDSC, which took about 2 hours. All volumes are clean.
I ran SFC. Again no integrity violations were found.
There were no error messages.

I uploaded the CBS log to https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=EF6F81DA54DDBC35!279

I've tried Windows validation many times before. The green ring rotates for hours to no good effect. I left it overnight one time. I fear the same will occur this time too.

Here is a new MGADiag. Any ideas are welcome...

Thanks for your suggestion Andrew..
I was also hoping to avoid a complete reinstall. It is such a waste of time... Days I expect to uninstall, reinstall and update all my programs. Personally I think it must have been a Windows update that was released around 14th September, but I don't know which one.

Rather wasting time doing a reinstall I'd probably buy a Mac instead and spend the time installing everything from new on that machine instead. I would use a Windows emulator like Parallel if I had to for some Windows only programs. It is certainly a potential Plan B that I am seriously considering. It's just the cost that makes me hesitate. For the time being I'll persevere with trying to fix my PC.... Ever hopeful!

Hi Jezza,

Can I make a suggestion? Can you temporarily disable ESET, then attempt activation?

Hi Golden,

Thanks for the suggestion. I did disable ESET on previous attempts, but it restarts on the next reboot. That was the best option offered by ESET. I'll try disabling ESET at Windows Start-up. If that doesn't work then I think a complete reinstall is probably my next course of action. Uninstall all my important programs, drivers etc is a real pain. Another weekend spent on this annoying problem is far from appealing.

Does anybody know of a quick way to save all the device drivers?

That is unless the appeal of a nice new Mac tempts me too much. I guess they aren't perfect either, or cheap!

There's obviously a failure somewhere in the install of SP1
This could be a fairly simple registry error, or it could be a lot deeper than that - a Repair is still your best bet.

Thanks Guys. I'll try the repair install option. More news later... Ever hopeful!

By the way I have just starting using the Seven Forums app on my iPad 2. It works very well

I disabled ALL the start-up programs. I also uninstalled ESET and Malwarebytes, and an old fax program that I like. After I ran the repair install (upgrade option). There was a message saying that Pocket PC and Windows mobile might not work after the up date (not a problem I don't have them any more), also to deactivate iTunes on the PC. I did that, then started the install again.

After 2 hours it was going through the last of the five steps: 'Transferring files, settings and programs' on 'installing devices and setting up your system' stage. It failed, with the message:
'Windows could not configure one or more system components. To install Windows restart the computer and then restart the installation'.. OK?
It reverted back to the old version...

Not to give up easy I then unplugged all the USB and network devices apart from the two monitors, a USB mouse and Ethernet cable to the internet router. I even removed the USB keyboard. I then ran repair install again..
After 2 hours it failed again at the same, almost final stage, with the same message. It then reverted to the old version again!

As I had disconnected all USB devices apart from the USB mouse I guess it might be a hardware incompatibility issue inside the computer, but have no idea which component. I wonder if it might even fail a complete reinstall.?

Is there an install log which might point me in the right direction and can somebody can read it for me... Pretty Please!

This is SO annoying.. Any thoughts or suggestions are very welcome.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but with the amount of time you spent on this a clean install would have solved all your issues, and you would be up and running by now. Not only that, but after getting everything the way you like you can create a system image and then always have a perfect install. Also these are OEM provided bloated installs of windows 7, and I feel that you would not have any issues if you re-install using a pure windows 7 disk.

Trust me, I know you and others want to avoid it, but I am only saying this as I believe it to be in your best interest. I know your frustrated, tired and angry with this issue. I would be too. Granted I have never had this issue, but I can completely understand the frustration.

If you 100% want to do away with a clean install, I have another suggestion.
Since your a business, Have you tried directly calling Microsoft? They will help you for free as its a issue related to windows updates and authenticity. You should be able to get real support from them.

Andrew, I can assure you that any activation issues dealt with here receive as good, if not better attention, thanks largely to Noel+Tom. If you read the first post and follow the link posted therein, you will see that Jezza started on the MS site, and was then referred here. There is no point in him going full circle.

Jezza, unless Noel has other suggestions, I think it may be time to consider a clean install, as painful as it may be.

@Golden

I did read the original thread, and I know we do awesome work here. But that does not mean calling them is a waste of time. We don't work for Microsoft, or have a level 2 to escalate the issue too if we do not know. I applaud everyone's efforts here, but I am trying to think in the mind of the customer, and I felt those suggestions were valid.

I don't mean any offense to anyone here, I am just stating my opinion. I know NoelDP is amazing at windows updates issues and activation, and I don't mean in anyway that I don't think he can solve this. I also do not mean to say that you cannot get real support here. You can, I just feel that they might think or know something we do not. (I know the wording in my reply stated real, which looked harsh. I did not mean it in that way.)

I am just thinking my suggestions were for least amount of time and possibly additional things overlooked. Once again, I mean no disrespect to anyone here.

Your awesome for reading this.
From experience, I can say that 90% of the time, if we haven't been able to fix the problems in the WGA forums, them MS will recommend a repair install at least. Since that's failed here already, the chances are that they would then recommend a clean install.

Effective individual assistance from MS doesn't really happen until you get to third-level support - and since this is a Retail license, they may be more willing to push it that far up the chain (it very rarely happens for OEM licenses, whatever the problems).

I certainly would consider trying them - although it can be frustrating jumping though the hoops in the first two levels.
