I uninstalled Norton per your instruction, rebooted, ran the command, rebooted and am now installing MSE, the error has gone again, would you recommend I try a fresh install of Norton or look elsewhere?

Why reinstall what broke the system in the first place - stick with MSE for a while and see how you get on with it.

Never had problems with it before this apart from the odd crash. What AV would you recommend?

MSE is quite good enough for 99%+ of people.
It's only if you start actually looking for trouble that it may have problems.
Any AV should be backed up with an independent malware scanner - and MBAM is the pick of the bunch at present.
