Windows 7 clean install - BIOS questions & system startup time

Hi RedLand,

Back to the first disc so, to give it another shot.

If that doesn't work then we will download a Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-Bit ISO and use that!

As I said previously, the installation disk from Dell should have all the drivers pre-installed. Especially as it is a Dell Reinstallation DVD Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-Bit!

How does the Device Manager look, how many yellow triangles are there?

OK, but this disk does not have any of that. Just the base standard OS. Weird, when I go to install this TP-Link adapter it is telling me the USB isn't recognized. This definitely worked a few years back when I was doing a re-install, I am nearly certain of that.

Maybe try a restart then try again?

It will not work if it is a USB3, you will need to use a USB2!

Hi RedLad,

Out of curiosity, how does the Device Manager look, how many yellow triangles are there?

The restart actually picked it up Paul. For drivers, is any order recommended? Chipset, Bios, Display etc.
I usually [if needed] install the drivers in the following order:

[1] BIOS and/or Firmware Updates [Advanced Users].
[2] Motherboard or the Chipset.
[3] Video Adapter.
[4] Network Interface Card (NIC).
[5] Audio Adapter.
[6] Wireless Network Card or LAN Adapter.
[7] Any other hardware device drivers not listed above.

I don't think it really matters as long as you do the Chipset first!

Obviously sometimes you will need to install the LAN driver first in order to be able to get online to find and download the other drivers. Often, when you run M$ WU [Windows Update], it will download the drivers for you!

I hope this helps!

Lots more listed below that screencap, I have not installed the proper display drivers, so that is why the screen is such low resolution I guess. It looks like the same ones I listed a few posts back.

OK. So there are none under the Display Adapters, Nerwork Adapters, etc?

BTW, turn OFF automatic WU [Windows Update], change it to NEVER!

Is this really urgent as it states? If I did install this Bios file, does it require an actual wipe yet again? I do remember I had changed some things in the Bios with the previous guys helping me here 3 years back. If I can avoid this, i would be happy:

No it isn't. When I do a clean install, if I find that there is a BIOS update [which may also include a device firmware update], I update the BIOS first, before updating any other drivers. This guarantees that when you run WU it will detect the new BIOS and offer the appropriate updates.

Installing a BIOS [Firmware] update does not require a clean install.

I hope this helps!

OK, I will worry about the Bios later. In the meantime I installed the Nvidia Quadro Graphics Driver and restarted.
Just about the updates, should I just wait till I get all of these important ones installed (in chunks, as there are a lot) then set it to Never??

For that earlier post abput some Chipset driver not installing, that was maybe because the Bios is older that I have?

Anyway, I did manage to download and install Intel Chipset Device Software which is just over 10MB. The failed one was around 115MB.

Paul, I will leave it at that tonight I have to head off and will get back to this tomorrow. Thanks again for all of this help, very much appreciate it.

Hi RedLad,

The reason I recommended that you turned off automatic Windows Updates after the installation had finished was because of the time it takes to download and install them all, not to mention the numerous re-starts needed. You will also need to run WU's several times until there are none left. I thought that was the sensible option so as you could see if the OS was running smoothly and didn't need another clean install, which would of course mean re-doing all the WU's again!

Your OS will run perfectly OK with your current BIOS settings [you can update [Flash] the BIOS at any time]. When you do update the BIOS however, I would run WU again and check the Dell website to see if there are any new updates available!

Now, if you had set the WU [Windows Update] to Never check for updates (not recommended), you would have had an option of how you wanted to do the WU's. The first would have been to keep running WU until they were all installed, and the second and much quicker option would have been to use DISM++.

As you have started with the automatic WU's, I suggest you carry on with that method!

A possible reason that the Intel Chipset Device Software [around 115MB] failed to install could be that it requires the BIOS update. It could possibly get picked up and installed by one of the WU runs.

I hope this helps!
