AVG isn't free. There's no free edition, just the retail versions. and it doesn't make a lot of sense to buy anti-virus for a beta.

Greeting everyone,
Just discovered this forum and glad to see how active it is and looks like a lot of really good info for all of us experimenting with W7.
Now onto the subject.
PC Tools Anti Virus free edition seems to be working.:D
Yes, not the best but since we are running W7 Beta anything is better than nothing.
NOD32 looks promising but seems to be a resource hog.
Tried Comodo and it didn't play nice. I will give it another go.;)
just my two cents worth.:)
Anyone else with different working Anti-Virus programs other than what has been covered?

From what I have read over that past week or so,....yes...Avast seems to be to most stable of the free anti-virus programs available for W7. AVG comes in second but there seems to be more complaints about AVG.
Since we are just using a Beta release of W7 there is really no need to buy a AV program at this point.
Anyone try PC Tools anti-virus yet? Seems to be stable and it is free.
Here is the link PC Tools AntiVirus - Free Anti-Virus Download

From experience i have found avast to be very good with windows xp.
Therefore i am happy to use it with windows 7.
I did have to create a firewall rule before windows would let the program update though.

Other have posted Comodo Internet Security works if you install it with administrator rights.
Still has not worked for me. Get to the install stage it stops and rolls back to initial install and stops.
Wont go any farther than that with no explanation as to why. Help:cry:
Using NOD32 Beta now until it expires on 03/02/09

NOD32 looks promising but seems to be a resource hog.

Hi smoaky

I do have one thing to say...39MB's is a "resource hog"?

Nod32 AV is actually one of the smaller footprints around. Now if you're talking the ESS suite, I haven't used it since I was Beta testing it but I hear the footprint for it is still one of the smallest.

Just an FYI here

Problems with Antivir Workstation

I've tried Antivir Workstation (the version contained in Avira enterprise bundles) on x64. Worked fine with one really anoying exception: sometimes Webguard prevented my browsers from connecting to any server. Both IE and Firefox would simply display a grey, empty window instead of the requested page.

Quite hard to debug as - for example - ping to the url worked fine and the browser didn't show any error-messages. Disabling Webguard fixed the problem.

I've now switched to the free version of Antivir and use the W7 Firewall+Defender to replace the additional features of Antivir Workstation. This works fine.

Thanks for the correction. :o
I am actually testing W7 on an old laptop. That is why NOD32 seems sluggish.
W7 actually runs on 900Mhz CPU with a mere 384 RAM.( Thought what the heck I,ll try installing W7 on this ole laptop and see what happens) and whattya know it runs pretty good!!
A bit slow but it still runs on the configuration. Try that with Vista!!!
Also running W7 on my main system.

I ditched my Antivirus on the 8th of November 2006 and stopped using software firewalls back in 2004 and I have never regretted it once since :D

Still not one infection :D and If I cared about outbound protection I wouldn't have the computer connected to the Internet ;)

I always win at playing "Spot the Virus" :p

Same here. I usually run an online scan about once a month when I'm bored but haven't had an infection since I've stoped using AV protection a couple years ago.

Run with LUA (non admin), stop downloading pirated software, use Opera/Firefox as your default browser with an updated filter.ini or the noscript plug-in, get a hardware firewall if you don't already..It's really not that hard to practise safe computing and honestly all an AV is gonna do kick out a couple false positives to make you feel like your money was well spent while the real threats slip by undetected .

Not saying running without an AV is for everyone, just don't let the false sense of security it offers lead to bad browsing habits.

Hi smoaky

Isn't Nod32 just an AV? Pretty sure it is, 39MB at idle would be considered a resource hog when compared with an Internet security suite like KIS with the AV, firewall, proactive defense, etc, it sits at 10-14MB at idle and eats less CPU to boot.

All bs aside if you have to have an AV go with Avast or Kaspersky for 32-bit. Bitdefender on 64, afaik it's the only one that's truely native 64 and doesn't have to hump WOW64 while doing its thing.
