Windows 7 Crashing Repeatedly

Hi

First post here after seeing the great support you guys have provided to others :D

I have an issue where my brothers packard bell pc (details against my profile) keeps crashing repeatedly since installing the full cklean install of windows 7.

Previously the RC1 version was installed for a few months and never had any problems. I have followed all of the debugging instructions in the sticky and am getting 'probably caused by: hardware'

Is this the end of the road finding out the cause of the problem as it points to hardware? When the computer has been crashing we've had to hold the power button in to reboot, could this dump just be reporting that as a hardware fault?

I ran whocrashed and it reports WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR which as explained above might relate to the hard reboots being performed when it crashes.

Any help would be really appreciated. any other info required let me know.

Thanks

just seen this in the event viewer - "Performance power management features on processor 1 in group 0 are disabled due to a firmware problem. Check with the computer manufacturer for updated firmware."

Any ideas what driver/firmware it refers to?

Hi and welcome

We can really do alot more if we have the dmp not the text of the header. can you use these instructions to find and upload it to us? http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lo...-nov-generating-memory-dump-hung-process.html

Thanks BTW bugcheck 124 is hardware related but could be the cpu, ram, or a controller.

Info on the STOP 0x124 error and some suggestions on what to do: http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lockup-debug-how/35349-2-int-stop-0x124-what-means-what-try.html

In essence, this is your processor telling Windows that it encountered a problem. Unfortunately, reading the report is difficult, and even if you are successful in reading it, it usually doesn't provide any clear cut results.

I find that these errors are usually one of two things:
- incompatibility (either hardware or driver)
- broken hardware

So the vista driver fault bit in the dump isn't really relevant? Does that not confirm for sure that one of my drivers needs updating as it's incompatible? What is the relevance of the kernel processor mentioned, is there a driver directly related to this that I could update?

Thanks

Other than the steps suggested in the previous post (and that link that was given), there just isn't that much that you can do.

Check all drivers to make sure that they're designed for Win7. If they're not, then you can't be sure of them.
Check all hardware to make sure that it's not malfunctioning or incompatible with Windows 7. That'll be expensive because there's not that many hardware tests that you can run that will tell you this information.

Hi

All drivers have now been updated but windows 7 continues to crash randomly. Sometimes this leads to the PC failing to boot requiring hard reboots repeatedly until it boots.

I have attached the latest minidump file which still reports a vista_driver_fault and the hardware fault.

I have read on various sites about a tweak to the voltages in BIOS which has resolved crashing for some people. Im not sure what exactly I should be tweaking so could someone point me in the right direction or suggest some other ideas I can try to get around this problem?

Thanks

Still says hardware. are you overclocking? have you run memtestx86?

give us all the specs for your machine maybe we are missing something

No im not overclocking, wouldnt know how to tbh. I havent changed anything in the bios, so it is the same as it was when running xp.

This issue didnt happen when I was using the RC1 version of Windows 7 and ran happily on that for 3 months or so.

I havent used memtest before but I now have it and will boot from the iso. I guess it should be straight forward then on (?!?)

I have been told today by my brother than when the pc is started up sometimes the sound of the fan varies each time. sometimes it stays on as it boots, other times it is quiet after a couple of seconds. The red light on the front of the pc stays on sometimes and occasionally the pc crashes halfway through booting up.

I had a similar issue with the fan on my pc a few months back which was down to the cooling fan/thermal paste which was a nightmare and ended up having to replace the motherboard. In that case though the pc would shut down completely when trying to boot so I hope this isnt relevant in this case as the fan is still spinning even when the pc crashes.
