Windows 7 doesn't let me use built-in microphone.

so..how do I know? I used to use Vista on my PC, and it worked perfectly without me having to plug in an external microphone or anything.

Also, right, I'm dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04

the microphone works great in Ubuntu using the sound recorder, but when I switch to windows 7, the sound recorder doesn't work at all. it won't take any noise no matter how loud I shout. (kinda silly yelling at my computer but still...)

this is my first post so I'm hoping that all the specs show up in my signature or something.

so the reason I wanna use the built-in microphone is for Google talk cause they got that new voice calling feature, and it keeps telling me I need to download the voice plugin even though I've downloaded and installed it like 10 times already. I've tried it in IE 8, chrome, and firefox and it doesn't work, so I'm thinking it's because Windows 7 doesn't recognize my microphone.

Here's what my current setting looks like:

Edit: I forgot to mention. I downloaded the driver from this site after the "default" audio driver didn't work after a fresh install of windows 7.

That screen shot before or after you installed the Realtek driver? Reason for asking is that it is showing as using the default Windows driver.

Also are you sure that your laptop has Realtek audio? Again the reason for asking is because there is about 40-50 variations on the CQ60,

Compaq Presario CQ60-100 Notebook PC series -  Download drivers and software - specify product name - HP Business Support Center

and not all of them use Realtek for the audio. I clicked on one of them at random and it uses Conexant for the audio. Might want to find the exact model number of your laptop and see what HP has for it.

ok cool. cause I think the Vista OS I had before windows 7 used conxenant something. gonna try that out. and yeah, the screenshot is after i got realtek.

I just know that realtek is the most popular audio driver on Cnet Downloads for vista/7 so...

and the number is CQ60-211DX

okay. just installed Conexant. microphone working great now.

but there's a new problem. when I plug in a pair of headphones, the volume control doesn't automatically adjust to my previous settings. so if I mute my main computer speakers, Conexant would also mute whatever earplugs I plug in. It doesn't save my earplug and speaker settings individually. :(

oh well, I'd choose the microphone over this other feature.

btw, is this the official windows 7 forums? casue the site looks alot of internet explorer lol
