Windows 7 freezing and Graphics card

Hi All

The first time I ran Win 7 it worked fine, then after all the drivers loaded up, it didn't! This is what happens and this is what I've done. I would like your opinions please!

Windows 7 (32 bit) will boot up and start all the way through, everything will look fine until I try to use the start menu or anything on the sticky menu, when nothing will happen (the icons don't even 'shimmer' when the mouse moves across them). I can right button click until my hearts content until I open a short cut on the desktop. The program will open then just freeze like the start button, although I can still move the mouse and the windows button on the keyboard will open the menu and I can run programs through the keyboard, but when they open, they all freeze. The way to get out of this was to open the task manager (ctrl-alt-del), then just shut it down (X in corner!) and then the system runs. This would even happen in safe mode with everything I could take out, taken out of the start-up. I tried a fresh install of the 64 bit software and same happens again, but this time, the only drivers Windows went looking for was my graphics card. As soon as I restarted the same happens.

My graphics card is an NVid Geforce FX5200 and I am very tempted to buy a new card tomorrow as I am convinced its that!

Any comments or ideas?

Yours

I don't agree with you, but then I don't disagree with you either. In fact, in the absence of firm evidence one way or the other, I try not to form any opinions at all. It might be your video card, or it might not. Spending substantial money on hunches is a bad idea unless you're out of options (or well-heeled).

- As a suggestion, test the effects of completely uninstalling your anti-virus utility.

- If that doesn't help, ensure the BIOS is up-to-date.

- If that also fails to address the problem, do a "vanilla" reinstall of the OS - no apps, no games, no updates, no new drivers... nothing at all that's not sourced from the Windows disc.

- Only if that results in the exact same symptom again, as soon as Windows is up and running, should you think about the probability that you've got damaged hardware.

I'll bet you $1 that it's NOT a hardware problem ;)

FX5200 is pretty ancient and slow slow slow if gaming at all, I'd still upgrade that. 8)
