Solved windows 7 hanging and crashing but not on xp

can you run a chkdsk/f on it? If you can't do it logged on to windows, try it in safe mode. Either way, It will tell you it needs to unmount the drive..allow it to do so and restart...I'm wondering if you have a bad HDD...or bad sectors on it..

Click, Start>>>Computer>>>Highlight Os/C>>>Right click>>>Properties>>>Tools>>>Error Checking, Click, Check now

or

in the start menu, type "chkdsk" in the search bar. When it shows up in the area above, you may need to right click and select "run as administrator" to get the cmd prompt to open instead of just appear for a sec. In cmd Prompt, you will need to type chkdsk/f and hit ENTER. Then y a few times. and Reboot...Depending on the Size of the hard-drive, it may pay you to....go make supper. take a (long) shower, or whatever else you migh have in mind to do, as the CHKDSK process will take some time to run.

Then see what happens...

Or you can try a different hard drive if you have one handy...and start fresh again...

These are just a few troubleshooting steps, as I don't know exactly what is causing your issue.

Ok....but this is a weird problem..you meet the minimum requirements? Perhaps you can post your spec's if you haven't done so already...Motherboard, Processor, memory...etc...

Windows 7 system requirements - Microsoft Windows

I copied and pasted the article in-case the link don't work.

Windows 7 system requirements:
If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Additional requirements to use certain features:

Internet access (fees may apply)

Depending on resolution, video playback may require additional memory and advanced graphics hardware

Some games and programs might require a graphics card compatible with DirectX 10 or higher for optimal performance

For some Windows Media Center functionality a TV tuner and additional hardware may be required

Windows Touch and Tablet PCs require specific hardware

HomeGroup requires a network and PCs running Windows 7

DVD/CD authoring requires a compatible optical drive

BitLocker requires Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 1.2

BitLocker To Go requires a USB flash drive

Windows XP Mode requires an additional 1 GB of RAM and an additional 15 GB of available hard disk space.

Music and sound require audio output

Product functionality and graphics may vary based on your system configuration. Some features may require advanced or additional hardware.

PCs with multi-core processors:
Windows 7 was designed to work with today's multi-core processors. All 32-bit versions of Windows 7 can support up to 32 processor cores, while 64‑bit versions can support up to 256 processor cores.

PCs with multiple processors (CPUs):
Commercial servers, workstations, and other high-end PCs may have more than one physical processor. Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate allow for two physical processors, providing the best performance on these computers. Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, and Home Premium will recognize only one physical processor.

Ok, I see your spec's and they look fine. Have you checked your Device Manager? Are there any conflicts? Red X's?

go to START and right click on COMPUTER and chose PROPERTIES then Device Manager....

Other than that, I don't know why you can't do any updates...Are you accessing this forums from that computer?

Ok...then on the computer with Windows 7, when it is loaded and on your desktop..go into the device manager and see if you have your Network Adapter drivers installed..maybe on the xp side (now) download the latest drivers to a usb flash drive or other HDD for that device, then when you go into Windows 7 update it using those drivers...

What happens if you leave it and walk away...and just let it do it's thing?

Maybe you have a corrupt disk? or even a scratch or finger prints on it?...not sure...

but in windows xp side, or on another computer, go to this website and download your version that you have and use the key that you have to activate it..this is for testing purposes...

Official Windows 7 SP1 ISO from Digital River « My Digital Life

This will already have the SP1 installed...for you...you will have to create an .iso of the download, but it will tell you all that on that web site...

I have to leave for work now (10am EST) and won't be home till 9pm est....but I'll try to check the forums from my phone later...

Hmmm...I don't know what is going on then.... You have a New HDD, a Different Version of the OS.

Have you cleaned out the case from all dust and lint? Overheating does not cause a computer to freeze, it makes the computer shut down completely. But it is also good to make sure it's clean. Don't use a Vacuum, but rather blow it out some how. I use a Compressor with a moisture filter on it. I have also used Caned Air at times in a pinch.

Are all your fans working?

You could have a power problem, the power supply adapter might be loose...But probably not..I'm just trying to throw out suggestions at this point.

Could be a loose Video or Memory Card?
Your computer's memory cards may have worked loose. I would pull them all out, one at a time and replace them back into the same slots. The memory that's in there, did you upgrade them at all, or did they come stock? Have you moved them around too? They have to be put in, specific spots. the Highest closest to the CPU and if you have 4 slots of dual core, the memory cards have to be identical in Slot 1 and 3 and the same for slot 2 and 4. In other words, don't have a 1GB stick in slot 1 and 2 and a 512 MB in slots 3 and 4. They need to be 1GB slot 1 and 3 and 512MB in slot 2 and 4. I am only using these numbers, 1GB and 512MB for reference. You could have something different. Slot 1 is the one that is closest to the CPU..

Here is a link you can reference: http://www.ehow.com/about_5070329_causes-computer-freeze.html

ok there is only 12 slots on the board the are a dual set with a 2 gb kit of 2 sticks at 1gb from kingston in them the power supply and adapter is secure same with graphics card bascially everything on the inside is how it should be as im using the same computer to type on here but from a win xp os on a 2nd hdd the xp installtion works fine no problems at all. which is why i can understand y 7 wont work the same but as i have said before i can go on win 7 safe mode and it never hangs or freezes at all its when im on the normal mode that it hangs and freezes etc. hence the confusion
