Windows 7 hangs 60 seconds when booting

When turning my W7 Pro x64 desktop on in the morning I see:

1. The "Starting Windows" screen with the (c) Microsoft Corporation notice

2. then the screen goes black for about 60 seconds and I only see the cursor (I can move it)

3. then it asks me for my username and password

The funny thing is it wasn't like that a few weeks ago. It just went faster. I cannot think of anything I did (install new software, maybe left a CD or USB stick, etc.). I didn't change or add anything. Is there any way to see a log of what happens when booting? I tried Event Viewer but I'm not that familiar with it and I couln't see anything wrong.

My OS is on the C drive. My data is on the D drive. My C drive is a 128 GB SSD. The used space is 93.5 GB but it doens't add up. I have Bitdefender antivirus (the paid version) so I'm pretty sure my system is 'clean'. The D drive still has 185 GB free space.

Welcome to SF Dragonchaser!

This might seem a bit Silly, but that is usually the time where windows loads all the drivers and systems for the initial boot.

Have a look at this link, How To Troubleshoot Your Windows With The MSconfig Utility. You might find that it is not malware, just installed programs / updates that are hogging your system resources at load.

So disabling them will most likely remove this issue!

Hello and welcome Dragon

Thanks, ICit2lol. I did SFC and that went well: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

I'm doing the others now.

Thanks, Windows Sniper. I had a look at msconfig and there are about 150 (wow!) programs checked! I'm going to have to dig into that. I'm pretty sure some of them are causing the system to 'hang'. Thanks!

Just ensure you use the Hide microsoft button! You don't want to disable MS, even by accident :)

Also, make sure you leave your Graphics card drivers / sound drivers and AV software enabled.

Yep mate that is why I quoted the Optimise tutorial.

Having said that I did have a small problem just last week with a longer than normal start up I fixed with the chkdsk using those /f /r options and it takes no time anyway.

Another good one if you want to keep it tidy and you haven't got already is CCleaner CCleaner - Download there is also a tutorial in the tutorial section too:)

I checked msconfig and everything looks normal (I had already cleaned it up a while ago).

In the Boot tab I checked: No GUI boot, Boot log, and OS boot information. In the c:windows\Ntbtlog.txt I did notice a lot of drivers are loaded but then right after loading CLASSPNP.SYS hardly any additional drivers are loaded:

Slow boot - more ideas

Some suggestions that might help to track down the problem.

See: Use Windows 7 Event Viewer to track down issues that cause slower boot times - TechRepublic

Create the Custom View in Event Viewer by carefully following the steps mentioned and see if you can spot any obvious problems using the Event ID's.

Other than that you could temporarily install something like Soluto to pinpoint any other software related issues:

Soluto Free Download

Last time I used it it required the user to sign up for a free account. Suggest using a disposable email address.

I followed your advice and noticed my system was OK on 08/03/2014 but slower on 10/03/2014.

The article also told me to create another Custom View in Event Viewer to track down the issues and then I noticed it was Ditdefender:

This application took longer than usual to start up, resulting in a performance degradation in the system startup process:
File Name : vsserv.exe
Friendly Name : Bitdefender Security Service

Thanks, Callender!

I'll go contact Bitdefender support!
