Windows 7 harddisk index score

For all you trying to get a better score than 3.0, If you uncheck Write Caching for you hard drive under the policy tab and clear all wei scores and re run, you should get a better score.

Not just unchecking "Turn off Windows write cache buffer flushing on the Device.
Uncheck Enable Write Caching on the Device

When you're done with your WEI run, re enable write caching. You will have better performance with this checked and the only data you may lose ( in the event of a power loss) will be any immediate data writing to the HDD. IMO, an acceptable risk vs performance. It's up to you though...

As you can see with my results in this thread

Okay, thanks swarfega! I'll have to look into this raid thing. I think this requires a reinstall of the OS if I'm not mistaken. Those SDD's are hellish expensive at the moment, and the Velociraptor's are up there too! Decisions, decisions.

SSD prices are dropping fast.

We bought a 128 GB Patriot V2 probably about 4 months ago for $450. We haven't even powered it up yet (I will this week) and now its for sale for $280 from the same place.

We also just got a 32 GB for $80 (Its in my laptop right now) and I'm sure in a couple weeks the price will be lower once again.

Just buy one when you really want one :). Technology prices are always fluctuating because newer technology is constantly released. Just buy when you feel the price is justified.

Okay. So what's faster: Velociraptor 10K, or Seagate 7200 in a RAID 0?

Yes but there's several different kinds of 7200 RPM seagate barracudas. Some have 4 platters, some have 3, some are much faster than others.

I think he meant top out as in your hard drive score tops out at 5.9. This raises my eyebrows too as you run the raptors. For me, a .4 difference in performance is not a wowing type of think to make me want to go the raptor way. I assumed raptors would be in the high 6's... my sata II runs a score of 5.5 like i said.

I'm assuming WEI looks at all the installed drives while checking?

My "C" drive is only a single platter, 8Mb, 80Gb drive, whilst other drives installed are 640Gb dual platter 32Mb drives.

My HDD score is 5.8, up .6 from my Vista score

It's buggy

Yes, there is point in re-running the tests sometimes as Windows 7 has a very buggy WEI system right now. One time it even thought my flash drive was my HDD:confused:.

If it is so buggy then there is even less reason to run the test at all, and way less reason to run it more than once. If you don't trust it and it doesn't work, why do you continue to run the test? You contradicted yourself..

You should always unplug external devices before running any kind of benchmark.

Thanks for the cache solution. My laptop's HD was getting a 3.0 as well on Win 7 and I wasn't sure why as it got a 5+ on Vista, just unchecked the box and I'm back up to a 5.2 from a 3.0 now. (Still a 3.6 index score, but that's due to the crappy video card and not really unexpected.)
