Windows 7 logging me into a temporary profile

Hi, I've been having a lot of trouble with my computer and have only just sorted out a problem saying my copy of windows is not genuine (when it is) and I have been getting another problem with that.

This concerns Windows 7 logging me into a temporary profile when trying to access my main admin account.

It started off happening quite infrequently, and i was able to get onto my main account with a few system reboots.

But now I can't get into my main profile AT ALL.

If anyone can help me then that would be great

I have seen this a lot at work, its not annoying at all!

I manage to fix it by:

Mayhttp://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/4230-registry-backup-restore.html

1) Click Start
2) Type 'regedit'
3) Press enter

Before going any further, take a backup of the registry - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/4230-registry-backup-restore.html

4) Navigate to - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
5) Now delete the line with .bak at the end
6) Restart

I've tried both methods before, and it hasn't worked for me. I just tried again and nothing; it still logs me into a temporary profile after reboot.

FWIW, the OP's original non-genuine problem was cause by the system profilelist entries in the registry being missing completely - see http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...dows-7-build-7601-not-genuine-error-code.html

Oddly, I was able to fix this problem myself.

What was happening is the temporary profile had the registry entry of "(account name).(computer name)"

When my profile should just be "(account name)" (obviously!).

So what I did was modified the registry part inside the folder that listed my main profile as "(account name).(computer name)" to just "(account name)".

I hope that makes sense... Thank you for the help anyway!

Hi again, instead of starting an new thread I figured I'd resurrect this one.

My computer, yet again, is doing the same thing. Not entirely sure what happened to make it do this again, but it is.

I have a slight feeling it might have something to do with a virus, but I can't be 100% sure about that. My computer wont let me turn on my virus protection (I have Avira free antivirus) and it wont let me turn on windows update. I have a feeling this might have something to do with the same virus which may or may not be toying with my main account on my computer.

But I could be wrong about that, it's just a feeling I have.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you in advance.

Sorry to hear that. You might create a bootable 64-bit Windows Defender Offline USB key to use to boot from on your computer to do a full scan to help see if your system is clean.

Little update on my situation; with hours and hours of tinkering all night I've got my computer clean of a Trojan (which I believe was the root cause of most of my problems) and also got Windows Update and Firewall working perfectly fine once again. My system seems completely clean now, I have done a complete scan since and nothing has been detected.

Despite this, windows still logs me into a temp profile after I restart. I really don't know what's causing this mess, but it's my last remaining problem.

I will try this though, hopefully it may detect something I'm missing, but I no longer think it's the work of a virus or malware or whatever.

Ah, I see, I've tried this one before and it's never worked for me.

Even now it doesn't, it's took me hours getting back onto my account (i've had to switch my computer on and off a lot of times).

You could do a system restore at boot using a restore point (if available) dated before all of this started.
