Like the title says ... whenever I shut down it'll show the log-off screen then the shut down screen and then it just hangs up ... I then have to turn the power switch off to shut it down

Anybody now of a fix for this little problem ... it just started a few days ago

Hello,

How long are you waiting? Sometimes programs can make shutdown take a long time. Try leaving it for 30 minutes. If it does not shut down, we know we have a problem. If it does, we can figure out what program is causing the problem.

I will ask this question in advance: what anti-virus are you you using?

~Jonathan

Somethings to help us help you out...

  1. Where did you get your copy of Win7?
  2. Have you had this issue the entire time you've had Win7, or is it a recent development?
  3. If it is a recent development, what have you changed, added, deleted since it worked properly?
  4. Have you tried a repair install?

I am running Norton Internet Security 2010

I got my Windows 7 from Best Buy

I have NOT had these issues until recently ( 3 days or so ago ) I recently installed a Creative Labs SB X-fi sound card but everything seemed to work fine after the install ...

I recently lost my drives as they weren't showin' up in COMPUTER but I fixed that problem

Hope this helps

See if waiting helps. In the mean time, try disabling Norton.

I too run Norton IS 2010... that's not the issue.

Had to make sure you are running a Genuine MS copy of Win7, and not a torrent...

Seems like you should point your finger at the X-fi driver.... try a rollback of the driver and let us know what happens...

I let this thing sit for almost 3 hours and it never did shut down ...

I did a rollback on the X-Fi drivers and that didn't fix it either ...

I'm at a loss as to why this or any of the other problems I've had are appearin'

Thanks for the help though !

Here is what you can try:

Open Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Esc), and go to the Processes tab.

End half of the processes, and write down which ones you ended.

Try shutting down. You then know what half the bad process is in. You can then go through them one by one until you figure out which process is causing the problem.

I'll try that ...

By the way ... I have 58 processes runnin' ... does that sound right ... I also have the SHOW PROCESSES FROM ALL USERS checked ... should I shut down half from that menu or the un-checked menu ?

Thanks again for your time and help ... it's MUCH appreciated !

Try only ending the processes from the un-checked menu.

Alright ...

I think I have it BUT I can't get rid of it ... the problem I believe is a Sound Blaster 2 ZS ( my privious sound card ) theres a file that just won't un-install ... I have tried everything but I can't get rid of it ...

Is there something I can do to get this file deleted ...

Thanks

Does it hang before the screen goes dark or after? Some Power Option settings leave the fans running after the system has actually shut down.

When I select to shut down my computer ... I get the log off screen and then the shut down screen ... thats when it hangs up and that screen stays on until I have to cut the power off

I believe it's that Sound Blaster 2 ZS file thats causin' the problem and I cannot delete that file to save my life ...

Is there some way to delete that SB 2 ZS file ?

Thanks for ALL the help is resolving this matter !

You could try a reinstall of Win7. Or search the registry and HDD for anything related to the suspect driver and delete it all!
