Windows 7 or XP for gaming? Plus help.

Well hi, this thread kinda blew up.
Anyway, I'm 100% positive that this new system will run Windows 7. I say this because I had an old P4 with a 1.8ghz processor and a gig of ram that ran 7 just fine.

You're right, ezeht, it's probably DDR2. Maybe I heard the number wrong. Either way, I'm kinda hoping it is DDR2 now, because then I could just drop in the 1 gig stick of DDR2 I already have, if the speeds match.

When I say p4 I mean socket 478 and chip sets 865 875- after reading the p4 was also sockets 423 and lga 775.

So I guess I am wrong and later p4's I guess lga 775 could do other memory

As for hyper threading- it would be said better. It tricks windows into thinking it has 2x the number cpu's it really has. Some will argue it is not better some say yes. I think intel i3 yes i5 no i7 yes and no hyper threading etc.

I know it is amd hybrids that could use older cpus and normal and or ddr2 etc memory.

So my bad sorry. I was not trying to argue with folks- I was just trying to help and had never heard of such a thing and didnt want you to waste your time. Again tho p4 is pretty old and is no guaranty vista or w7 will support it or that certain mobo or chip set or hardware you have or will get- what ever. So you may not care to waste a lot of money trying to complete a system then find out you can not use vista or w7-

You do need to know exact mobo cpu and chip sets etc and research and you can find out if vista or w7 will support it before you ever try and put vista or w7 on it. Folks just willy nilly it will work is wrong.

As a fact folks had to buy all new systems that would support vista because older stuff would not be supported- You need to figure out the cut off. Get exact hardware specs and do your research and maybe save your self some later head akes and or money you could spend on newer hardware. Is what I was trying to save you from..

We are all trying to help- so the more info or [blow up] the better- and might help others down the road coming up too. As far as tech sites go most ask that folks post full exact system specs or some will not try and help at all. I say again- it is not certain vista or w7 will support that said p4. You can first do your research or maybe later be sorry for not doing so..

I first touched a computer and learned to turn on a mac imac 400mhz my buds system. My first mobo and cpu was a ecs p3 450mhz- then jumped to p4 875- then jumped to amd and chip sets nforce 4 and 590 and now back to intel and p55 i5. And is so many cpus and or chip sets I can not remember everything or being I did not own it I did not really try either. I bought the fastest I could afford at the time or was give to me etc.. My focus is pc gaming and recording in game play. I still learn a lil about macs as I go. My roomy is a mac hippie and his latest imac uses osx 10.6 I think it is and is a intel cpu 2.06 dual core and ddr2 I think it is.. I can get confused somethings too- so.

Well, as was said, I could run a trial copy for free with no problems to make sure it runs, but I'm probably going to go ahead and stick to XP. I wouldn't be able to play any games that would require DX10-11 anyway, so I don't absolutely need 7. And Aero would just slow it down.

Do what ever makes you happy. There's nothing wrong with running XP on an older rig, I have it on my backup beater PC. I could probably run windows 7 on it but I can't justify spending the extra cash, for another license, for a PC I only use once in a while. Thats why I suggested running 7 as a trial. If you already have a DVD you can try before you buy. If you make a universal install disk you can try out different versions too.
