Not my area of expertise but looks like the key is an SLP (used for OEM activation by major manufacturers, Dell, HP Etc), and you are trying to install on a Retail MSI Motherboard

Barman is correct.
Its been "lifted" from a OEM sticker - DEMAND your money back.

It will not be genuine on a retail motherboard.

Alright, I will ask for a refund on my product. However where I am from, only OEM and OEI copies of Windows 7 are available in local retailers. I am honestly very interested in buying a retail copy of Windows 7 for my home pc, cost not an issue.

Will an OEI key work? Or are those lifted too? Sorry if the questions seem malinformed, this is my first build.

There are two versions of OEM the OEM SLC that you have been sold here which is designed for use by Major Manufacturers. There is also the OEM for System Builders - designed for use by small System builders and refurbishers, This has some of the restrictions of the SLC OEM version, (Main ones being No support from Microsoft and Single use only, Cannot be transferred after initial Use).

The second version is the one used by private builders like yourself (Microsoft Has at times stated that you must sell the system after build to qualify for the licence but have not known any of these licenses being disabled for this )

The best version is of course the retail version but this is now not being sold to anyone by Microsoft and is extremely rare, also with even the OEM copies selling for anything up to $200 each the cost of the retail version will be prohibitive to say the least

Finding Windows 7 Retail, is like finding hens teeth on a hog ranch.
My local supplier as of about a month ago could still find Windows 7 Pro OEM Builders. $140.00.
Bear in mind my local supplier works with several warehouses across the country.

Thanks to everyone for replying quickly and informatively. Can't believe I haven't asked help from these forums sooner...

I have other questions if it's okay? Mainly, can I tell just from the box or the sticker itself if the key is an OEM for private builders, or something about the selling code? For example, the other place I can get Windows 7 from here lists it as "Microsoft Windows 7 Pro 64-bit English 1pk DSP OEI DVD".

Or is it really a matter of getting lucky nowadays? My retailers here seem unaware of which is which; i remember asking the person who sold me this key "is this one of those installers that have the logos in the control panel which just don't activate after a while" and he said no... No one here even knows what OEI or OEM is, not even me to be honest before getting to this forum.

EDIT: I think I got a copy of Windows 7 Pro retail, but it's region restricted to SEA (where I'm from). Do i need to do a reinstall or can I just type in my new key?

Hi MangoCloud,
Wont hurt to try just inserting the key.
If its rejected, you will have to re-install with the correct media.
Not sure exactly how MS restricts the OS.(assume its language dependent)

What i can tell you is
OEI installs are issued with ONLY 1 version, bit specific
With either a 32 or 64 bit CD >>not both<< as in a normal OEM
Therefor the KEY and the CD MUST come together or the install will become non genuine.

I inserted the key within the installer's box (it has both 32 and 64 bit, just like a legitimate retail cd), and it works! I have genuine windows 7 again.
