Windows 7 randomly freezing/crashing

Hey there,

So basically this problem has been occurring for a while now (at least 6 months) and it is really started to annoy me and my friends so I have taken it upon my self to fix the problem.

The problem is very simple, my computer completely freezes randomly. I have no idea why and it is very random but I can't move my mouse, all audio stops, ctrl alt delte doesn't work and even caps lock. I also receive no BSOD so I have to hard reboot my computer.

I am hearing the turning on Driver Verifier so I am going to do that just after posting this!

Also I'm not super tech so try and keep it simple

Hey Dude, Welcome to SF.

A couple of issues you have in your eventlog.

Firstly, there is a problem with your HDD.

Start by closing all programs you have open.

Can you run "sfc /scannow" in elevated command and post the output.

Just to make sure that there is no controller errors. (If it BSODs during this, then it is the most likely cause)

Hey man, thanks for the reply

I went ahead and did as you said

But when I went to check the drive for errors it said it can't check it while the drive is being used which makes sense. So I set it to a scheduled test and restarted my computer as I said it did. It appeared to restart but than crash and restart again. It told me it had an error in start up and I have come across these before so I hit "Start Windows Normally" but now it is on the screen "starting windows" and nothing is happening. Is this windows checking the drive or should I be worried?

Hey Willdude, How far has this progressed now?
Unfortunately I have no experience with Driver Verifier, however from a quick look all it should do is run a check on your drivers and hardware against the MS database?

If it is stuck on starting windows, you could very well have a hard drive problem that was kicked off by the sfc scan.

Are you able to shut it down, then restart into safe mode?

So my only option was to launch Windows Startup repair and it is currently attempting to repair. Also the SFC scan worked find it was the other windows scan that started this.

Right, if that was the other check, which was a full error check. Then that may show that you have drive sector errors. I would hope that once the repair is complete that you can get back on and back up everything if you haven't!


The other way to check this, do you have a spare USB or CD? You may need to run LiveLinux and do a thorough drive check once your system is backed up.

You should have consulted with someone who knows about Driver Verifier before enabling it. There is enough reason that your computer does not restart with DV enabled. The lot of your startup programs, when being verified, may rightly resist the computer to boot back, specially when Daemon tools is present there.

Now try these following two ... one by one.

   Tip

• If you fail to get on the Desktop because of DV, Boot into Advanced Boot Options > Safe mode. Disable DV there.
• If you cannot boot in Safe mode too, do a System Restore to a point you made earlier.

If you can boot into safe mode and disable verifier there, you dont need to read the remaining part of this post. Just make your reply following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions .

If you are forced to do a system restore, we will not get a crash dump to analyze. So you have to start afresh with Driver verifier.

First thing ..... Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known BSOD causer. Uninstall Daemon Tools at first. Then download SPTD standalone installer from Disk-Tools.com, and execute the downloaded file as guided below :

• Double click to open it.
• Click this button only:
• 
• If it is grayed out, as in the picture, there is no more SPTD in your system, and you just close the window.

Second thing ... Free up the startup. Windows does not need any other program to auto start with it, but the auto start programs often conflicts and causes various problems including BSODs.

1. Click on the Start button
2. Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
3. Select the “Startup” tab.
4. Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
5. Apply > OK
6. Accept then restart.

Now enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.

Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

   Information

Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

   Warning

Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

   Tip

• If you fail to get on the Desktop because of DV, Boot into Advanced Boot Options > Safe mode. Disable DV there. Now boot normally again, and try following the instruction of enabling DV again.
• If you cannot boot in Safe mode too, do a System Restore to a point you made earlier.

When you are done, click on button below ....

It will download the DM log collector. Right click on the application and run as administrator. It will generate a .zip file on your desktop. Upload the .zip with your reply post.

The problem is I can't boot into safe mode as when it is loading windows files it gets up too \windows\system32\DRIVERS\amdkmpfd.sys and completely freezes

Also I have no system restore points so I am very stuck on what to do right now!

Good news is that I tired rhe option that boots to a version were it secessfully booted and I think all that did was disable Verifer. As for now should I be uninstalling dameon or?

As for now I am going to make a new DM log and upload it as requested

Also I am going to add a screenshot of Dump File from the BSOD that was occurring when I was trying to start my computer (Though Blue Screen Viewer)

The verifier enabled BSOD was a combined effect of Daemon Tools and iTunes. Thats a vicious combo of software.

You know how to uninstall Daemon Tools completely form your system. Do it. It will be good if you let iTunes go, too; at least for the time being. Daemon tools will go forever.

Also dont forget to free up the startup folder.

Now, I doubt that it may be the root cause of your random freezing issue. Please continue with driver verifier for one more BSOD at least. But dont forget to make a system restore point manually before enabling verifier. Now you know how important it will be.

Let us see one further crash dump.

All is well I have cleared up my startup and removed both Itunes and Daemon Tools but I went to creaute a restore point but it gave me an error saying

"The shadow copy provider had an error. Check the System and Application event logs for more information (0x80042306)

Any help on this?

It may occur due to disc corruptions, too. Test your HDD using Seatools: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/313457-seatools-dos-windows-how-use.html
It would be better if you run Seatools for DOS, and take both the short generic and generic test.

I am currently working on the seatools method but waiting until later tonight when I don't have to use my PC

Meanwhile I had problems with the windows fix for restore point as I can't find the registry I need to find (see image)

It is not a conventional windows 7 disc management screenshot. Usually there remains one more partition of 100 MB, named system reserved, and that is the system and active partition.

Here is a classic example: Click here.

At this stage I will suggest you to not mess with this windows installation anymore right now. Dont go with Driver Verifier etc. Just check the health of the disc. If it is OK, forget it .... itill it hangs and freezes anymore.

If it hangs again, do two things.

First, open the computer, clean the inside with Compressed air. Dust and moisture may cause those hangs. So clean the edges of the RAM sticks and SATA ports with dry cotton cloth. Then re-seat the PC.

Second: Plan for a clean reinstall, but not in a hurry. Cleaning the computer is the first priority. Then go for it if needed.
