Solved Windows 7 SP1 causes slow internet connection

Hi,

I formatted my 32bit Vista PC this weekend and loaded Windows 7 64bit on here. All fine, except my internet connection speed has now plummeted from around 15Mb to 8Kbps!! It's taken about 5 mins just to load this page

I've Googled and there seems to be a lot of similar issues. I've tried the following:

1. Run 'cmd' prompt as admin, and typed: netsh int tcp set global autotuning=disabled. It said 'ok' but after a reboot, nothing changed.

2. Run 'cmd' prompt as admin, and typed: ipconfig /release then ipconfig /reset. It output a load of stuff, and appeared to have done what it was supposed to do, but again, after reboot there was no change.

3. Go to 'control panel > network and internet > internet options > connections > lan settings' and uncheck 'automatically detect settings'. Reboot, still the same problem. So I reversed this and checked it again. No change still.

I've checked the modem/router etc and that's all fine - other people in the office are connected to it and are getting the correct speeds, both plugged in and via wifi. I'm plugged in.


I'm now at a loss as to what to do. Nothing has worked, and I literally can't even put up with this - it's just totally unusable.

Can anyone recommend anything else before I make the depressing switch back down to Vista?

Hi danwednesday, welcome to SevenForums.

Couple of things.
1) Please help us to help you. If you could fill out your System Specs as fully as possible that would be amazingly helpful.
2) You say you have a 15Mb/s connection. Is that 15Mb/s to yourself? Or 15Mb/s between everyone? You mention it's an office, so presumably you are sharing that bandwidth? Not that I think that's really the problem... but it does pay to be thorough.

I've filled out what I can of my system specs. Regarding the internet connection, it's a 20Mb Virgin Media cable broadband connection. Usually we pull about 15-18Mb on it. There are three other users of the connection - very light users who check their email every now and then. So this has nothing to do with the connection itself I'm 100% certain. I came in over the weekend to do this system upgrade - the connection was fine until I got Windows 7 installed, after which it bombed. I used my laptop to check and the laptop was still getting 15+Mb, yet my desktop was getting 8-30Kb. It's still the same. The connection is fine for everybody else, but I'm getting around 8Kbps on my upgraded Windows 7 desktop.

It had all gone so smoothly until now!

As I said, I doubt it's the connection, I can't imagine such a rapid decline. Try grabbing the drivers for your network card from here: Drivers & Downloads

They are Vista drivers, but they should work fine. After all, the Vista drivers were working fine for you before! Make sure you get the right one, 32 or 64 bit. (You don't specify which you have, although I'm gonna go out on a limb and say X64 as you have 8GB of Ram.)

I know this is almost no use to anybody now, but I made sure my drivers were up to date, then out of boredom I deleted the windows.old file which was taking up 200+Gb hard-drive space. I then rebooted and the system did a very lengthy black-screen file system check, which eventually completed. Now it seems much better.

Odd, and I have no idea whether it's fully fixed or not as the speed seems intermittent, but it's at least workable. Thanks Martin.

:huh: I'm guessing it was probably the driver. I can't see a ChkDisk solving it. Unless you had some serious problems.

Anyway, glad it's fixed
